1 Jan 1893      Sunday. At the Australian Hotel all day. Railway engine ran off the line tonight at Risclay?? Creek, 9 miles from Cowra. The engine driver killed and the fireman’s hand hurt.

2 Jan 1893      Sports on the Showground. W Boxall said his share of the expenses to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim  £3.16.0.

3 Jan 1893      John Connelly paid his share of the expenses £3.16.0. I sent my bill to James K. Morrice, 374 Kent Street, Sydney £13.12.0. John Connelly wrote Morrice a sharp letter.

4 Jan 1893      I got my horse and drove up to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim. Jim Sinclair walked up. I pulled down my tent that Taylor was using. I met one of the Harris’ and ordered a sheep. Warm day.

5 Jan 1893      Godson and I cut a crossing in the creek coming from the gate. I put a lock on the gate. Mr J.O’Connor came. I agreed to meet him at Cooper’s at 8 o’clock tomorrow morning. Godson had to pay for a sheep and give me one half. Harris brought one. James Sinclair and his brother Jack walked to Cowra.

6 Jan 1893      I met Mr J.O’Connor at Cooper’s. We followed the Burrowa River past Patrick Stinson’s and past Richard Anthony’s and past Prossers and up to Narallen Creek, and across on to a right hand creek where a quartz reef had been worked some years ago. Mr O’Connor’s son is working on this reef. We washed some good prospects from the rubble taken from a shaft 82 feet deep. We came back the same track. I got back to the camp at 9 o’clock.

7 Jan 1893      I drove in to Cowra and put my horse in Connelly’s paddock. A letter from Mr Morrice that he would be up to Cowra on the 16th January . Joseph Poole paid his share of the expenses for Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim  £3.16.0..

8 Jan 1893      Sunday. Stayed at the Australian Hotel all day. Young Graham drove kate  O’Shaughnessy and Grace  O’Shaughnessy from his place. Young Vaughan came with them.

9 Jan 1893      I got a Miner’s Right. I seent a Post Office Order for £1.7.6 to A.M.Nast, 49 Elizabeth Street, Melbourne for a pair of Peck’s Silver Eardrums. John Connelly wrote a letter to James Keith Morrice, 374 Kew Street, Sydney. James O’Shaughnessy and his wife [1] came from Parkes. Great heat today.

10 Jan 1893    I got my horse and drove up to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim. Got there At 2 o’clock. Real hot.

11 Jan 1893    John O’Connor came at 3 o’clock. We crushed some quartz from his claim on the right hand creek. In the evening, I put George Godson in a fresh place to sink. The boy Sinclair came from Cowra.

12 Jan 1893    Writing up my diary all day. T Anthony came. Great heat and smoke. I went up to the dam.

13 Jan 1893    At the camp all day.  James Sinclair came from Cowra.

14 Jan 1893    I drove in to Cowra. I took some grasss tree with me. Letter from Mines Department. My application for 25 acres on Morongla Creek refused for not sending £2.10.0 with the application. A letter from the Clyde Works, Granville for John O’Connor, Hovell’s Creek.

15 Jan 1893    Sunday. At the Australian Hotel all day.  A man named Kopps keeping a store in R Daly’s buildings opposite left a candle burning in a hat this morning and went to Canowindra. At dark, Grace  O’Shaughnessy and Polly Daly could see from the upstairs parlour a light through the cracks in the door. Could see a light. Mr R Daly had the back door broken in  and sent for the police and they took charge.

16 Jan 1893    John Connelly sent a telegram to W Jenkins, Blayney, that we would be prepared to go with him to Broula tomorrow morning. He replied that he would be up in the morning train. Kopps got remended for two days. Bail refused. Charles Ford refused a publican’s licence for a house near the Railway Station. Sent a letter from the Clyde Works re smelting on to Mr John O’Connor, Hovell’s Creek.

17 Jan 1893    I drove Mr Jenkins out to Broula this morning. He had a good look at North Broula. We got back to Cowra at 5 o’clock. Drove him up to the ststion.

18 Jan 1893    At Cowra all day. Very hot.

19 Jan 1893    Kopps committed. I was a witness. Great many people came to hear the case.

20 Jan 1893    Got my horse shod at McLeod’s and kept in stable.

21 Jan 1893    I drove Kate O’Shaughnessy up to Mount McDonald. She is engaged as a governess at Mr Fox’s, storekeeper. Got back to Cowra at 8pm.John Connelly got a letter from Morrice that his brother will be up next Tuesday to finish his contracts on Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim.

22 Jan 1893    Sunday. In Cowra all day.

23 Jan 1893    In Cowra all day. Commenced to rain this evening and continued most all night. George Lawrence Jr died. Rupture of a blood vessel.

24 Jan 1893    In Cowra all day. George Lawrence’s son buried today. River rose a little.

25 Jan 1893    I drove J.K.Morrice’s brother up to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim. I rode over to T Anthony’s place on Breakfast Creek. One of his daughters is very ill with La Grippe. Burrowa River rising.

26 Jan 1893    Peter Morrice fixing up the hydraulic. I assisted him. Real hot day.

27 Jan 1893    P Morrice fixing up the hydraulic. J.O’Comnnor came. I wrote a letter for him.

28 Jan 1893    I drove in to Cowra. We had a meeting of shareholders of the Sugar Loaf copper mine. We agreed to sink the 37 foot shaft deeper. Great heat today.

29 Jan 1893    I borrowed a sulky from boxall and drove down to James Butler’s, Merriganowry to look at a reef near his house. I got back to Cowra at 6 o’clock. Great heat. A few drops of rain.

30 Jan 1893    I drove to Anthony’s Hill. Killed a snake near the sluice box.

31 Jan 1893    Not working. Very hot day.

1 Feb 1893      I hired young Jack Sinclair to work on John Chivers’ claim at 15/- per week and George Godson to work for D Donnelly on his claim. Sinclair and Godson to work half day on each claim. Hot day.

2 Feb 1893      At the camp all day. T Anthony’s daughter not better.

3 Feb 1893      I walked out on the mountain at the back of Bolter’s Springs and shot a brush wallaby. Great heat.

4 Feb 1893      I drove to Cowra. Met Joe Poole and W Gray in a buggy going to the claim. We had a meeting at the Fitzroy Hotel. Connelly, Poole, Boxall and I  agreed to let J.K.Morrice go on with fixing up the boxes at present. Mrs Daly, Polly Daly and  Ladd? Gone to Blayney. Great heat.

5 Feb 1893      Sunday. At the Australian Hotel all day. Great heat.

6 Feb 1893      I drove up to Anthony’s Hill.Very hot. A shower at dark.

7 Feb 1893      I paid George Godson for John Chivers. Six weeks wages at £1.10.0 per week, less rations. Account up to February 1. T Anthony came. Real hot day.

8 Feb 1893      Jim Sinclair and I prospecting near Frank Lane’s. While we were away, John Connelly drove up J.K.Morrice and some other gentlemen. J.K.Morrice stayed. Connelly and the other gentlemen were gone before we came back. T Anthony came. Hot day.

9 Feb 1893      T Anthony brought my horse. We went to a place to get some samples of stream tin. Back at 5 o’clock.

10 Feb 1893    I drove in to Cowra. Real hot day.

11 Feb 1893    In Cowra all day. Sent two samples of sand to the Mines department to be assayed for tin. Three Aldermen elected today  – J.T.West, Hyams, and T Walsh. 105 in the shade.

12 Feb 1893    I drove out to Anthony’s Hill. Very hot.

13 Feb 1893    William Boxall, Joseph Poole and John Connelly drove out to the claim. J.K.Morrice wanted us to give him a clear receipt that he had finished his contract. We would not until he put up 35 feet more boxes to finish his contract. We had some hot words. He agreed to finish the boxes. They started back at 5 o’clock and took J.K.Morrice with them. I paid Harris £1.3.0 for sheep.

14 Feb 1893    I made out my bill against J.K.Morrice £16.7.5, his share of expenses since he became shareholder in the claim. I sent Jack Sinclair to meet the Cowra and Reid’s Flat mailman at the Burrowa River crossing place. I was working with P Morrice, sluicing. I got a sheep from Harris brothers. Great smoke coming from the west.

15 Feb 1893    Working with P Morrice, sluicing. T Anthony came. His daughter is getting better. Jim Sinclair working for Harris brothers, Bennetts Springs.

16 Feb 1893    P Morrice sluicing all day. The boxes don’t work well. Not enough water to keep them clean. Very hot day.

17 Feb 1893    Running down the boxes. Very hot day.

18 Feb 1893    Commenced to rain at 7 o’clock and continued all day.

19 Feb 1893    Sunday. John Chivers drove out with a pair of horses. Minnie and Grace  O’Shaughnessy and Tot Daly and Alexander from the Joint Stock bank. They started back at 4 o’clock. A letter from the Mines Department that the sample sent by me contains tin but too small for assay. A letter from J.K.Morrice for dates to my bill.

20 Feb 1893    P Morrice and I cleaning up the boxes all day. Very cold in the evening.

21 Feb 1893    I sent my bill to J.K.Morrice to 374 Kent Street, Sydney. £16.7.5. Running down the boxes all day. Abe Wiggins brought 500 feet of boards for J.K.Morrice to make 35 feet of boxes to finish his former contract. P Morrice is to make the boxes for him.

22 Feb 1893    Cutting timber all day to place the boxes on. Abe Wigins went back to Cowra. Cool day.

23 Feb 1893    Cutting a level place to put the sluice boxes on.

24 Feb 1893    P Morrice and I fixing the sluice boxes.

25 Feb 1893    Started at 5 o’clock for Cowra. Met D Donnelly and John Connelly at the Burrowa River. They are going to bennetts Springs. I got a letter from Mines department. Return for some black sand from Anthony’s Hill. Gold 6 dwt 12 grams. Silver 2 dwt 4 grams. Tin 7.96%. Meeting of Anthony’s Hill shareholders.

26 Feb 1893    Sunday. In Cowra all day.

27 Feb 1893    John Connelly and I went went to M T Phillips, Solicitor, and got him to write us a copy of a letter to send to J.K.Morrice, 374 Kent Street, Sydney giving him notice to attend a meeting of the Anthony’s Hill  shareholders in Cowra on next Monday to settle up all debts before starting the claim. Norah Neville Hotel burnt last night at Mount McDonald.

28 Feb 1893    I drove up to Anthony’s Hill. P Morrice has not done any work since Saturday. I told him that the Cowra shareholders did not intend to start the claim or engage any person until all debts contracted on the claim were paid up. I gave George Godson a letter from D Donnelly for him to go to Cowra and get paid as he did not require him any longer.

1 Mar 1893      I drove Peter Morrice in to Cowra. A letter from J.K.Morrice, 374 Kent Street, Sydney that unless John Connelly sent him an amply apology for the slanderous letter he had sent him, that he should take proceedings against him, and that he would not be at the meeting, and a notice that he had sold one of his shares to his brother, Peter Morrice, and that the said P Morrice would be at the meeting. John Connelly gone to Forbes.

2 Mar 1893      W H Boxall and I went to Mr Phillips’ Office, and had his advice. re Peter Morrice’s demand for two weeks wages for work he was doing on Anthony’s Hill  for his brother J.K.Morrice. He advised not to pay. I got to camp at half past 7 o’clock. Great thunder, and a little rain.

3 Mar 1893      Making up accounts all day. Speaking to young Harris. He will let me know when he will be able to bring me a load of pines to make a hut at Anthony’s Hill. A very hot day.

4 Mar 1893      At ther camp all day. A thunder storm at dark. A little rain.

5 Mar 1893      Sunday. I got my horse at 7 o’clock, and started, and only just in time, to cross the Burrowa River. Rising fast. Got to Cowra at 1 o’clock. Stayed at the Australian Hotel. A great thunder storm.

6 Mar 1893      A meeting of the Anthony’s Hill Sluicing Company, held at Pooles Fitzroy Hotel. M T Phillips gone to Forbes.

7 Mar 1893      At the Australian Hotel all day.

8 Mar 1893      W Gray and I hired a buggy from Plunkett for 5/- and borrowed a mare from John Connelly. We went the old road by The Islands to Walli on the Canowindra  and Mandurama road. We got to Joe brown’s on the Licking Hole Creek at 11 o’clock. Left the mare and buggy at the creek and walked to the Sugar Loaf copper mine. Sam McInnes there, and Hugh Murphy, a hired man. We had a good look around. Had some dinner and started back to Cowra . Got to Cowra at half past 6 o’clock.

9 Mar 1893      Raining most all night. John Connelly and I went to M T Phillips’ Office, and had his advice about making J.K.Morrice pay his share of the expenses on Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim. I gave him Morrice’s bill. He wrote a letter to Morrice. If he doesn’t settle, to summons to the next Small Debts Court.Raining most all the morning.

10 Mar 1893    At the Australian Hotel all day. Two small children buried. Diptheria. River falling.

11 Mar 1893    In Cowra waiting for a meeting. Boxall did not come until too late, so we had no meeting. M T Phillips got a letter from J.K.Morrice. He wants to see the agreement before he pays me my wages.

12 Mar 1893    After breakfast, I started for Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim, taking James O’Shaughnessy with me. He is going to work for D Donnelly on his claim.

13 Mar 1893    James O’Shaughnessy commenced work for Mr Donnelly, and Jack Sinclair commenced work for John Chivers, to work half day on each claim. We got half a sheep from Harris Brothers.

14 Mar 1893    I walked down to the Burrowa River to meeet the coach. No letters came.

15 Mar 1893    I drove in to Cowra. Connelly, Boxall, Poole and I were to have a meeting, but Connelly gone to Goolagong.

16 Mar 1893    John Connelly came from Goolagong. I saw Mr Phillips at his office. He had a letter from Morrice that he could not settle my account until he saw the agreement. I told Mr Phillips to summons him. Connelly, Poole and I had a meeting. We had to postpone it until next Saturday. Boxall would be home. I got some timber at Francis’ timber yard.

17 Mar 1893    St Patrick’s Day. Half holiday. Sports on the Showground and races at R Chivers, Back Creek. I started at 9 o’clock and got to Anthony’s Hill at 1 o’clock.

18 Mar 1893    I commenced to make a body for my buggy. Cooper came. I got permission to cut some pines to make a hut. Cloudy day.

19 Mar 1893    Sunday. James O’Shaughnessy and I walked along the mountain at the back of Shuttleworth’s fence, looking after wallaroos, and pines to make a hut. Thomas Anthony at the camp.

20 Mar 1893    T Anthony brought some specimens. I drove in to Cowra after dinner.

21 Mar 1893    I went up to the Court House. Judge Docker on the Bench, Wade, Crown Prosecutor. Wise, Barrister for Kopps. I was called to give evidence against Kopps for attempting to set fire to a store of R Daly’s in Bridge Street. The case lasted to 7 o’clock. At half past 10 o’clock, the jury found Kopps guilty on the second count, for setting fire to a small box under the counter in the store he kept.

22 Mar 1893    Lanty Ryan charged with killing a heifer of Maurice Walsh’s. The case broke down. No registered brand. The Judge sentenced Kopps to five years. John Muir and Henry Keys had a case about some liquor. Keys non suited.

23 Mar 1893    In Cowra. A letter came from the Mines Department. Rent for Broula £6.15.0. Mrs Daly came from Blayney.

24 Mar 1893    I drove out to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim . James O’Shaughnessy had cut 100 pines and got John Harris to cart them to the claim. In the evening, I got James, and Jack Sinclair to assist me to put up the hut.

25 Mar 1893    Putting up the hut. Hot, sultry day.

26 Mar 1893    Sunday. At the camp all day. Cloudy day.

27 Mar 1893    James O’Shaughnessy assisted me to put up the walls of the hut. I got a letter from John Connelly to come to Cowra. I got my horse and tied him up all night.

28 Mar 1893    I drove in to Cowra. I got a notice from the Mines Department that our Leases No1 and No2 at Broula, that suspension of Labour Conditions was granted for six months from 21st march. Mr D Donnelly gone to Bigga to address the electors. Grace  O’Shaughnessy, Tot Daly and Mrs Herman davis drove up to Mount McDonald to see Kate  O’Shaughnessy.

29 Mar 1893    After dinner, I drove up to N Challacombe’s on his farm on the old Mount McDonald road to meet the girls and waited until dark, but they did not come. I drove back to Cowra and put my horse in Daly’s stable. John Connelly gone to Goolagong.

30 Mar 1893    I drove to Broula and got some tools. A daughter of james Anderson died. Diptheria. Buried this evening. Tot Daly and Grace  O’Shaughnessy back from Mount McDonald.

31 Mar 1893    Good Friday. John Connelly and I went to see Mr D Donnelly about Anthony’s Hill and Broula. Polly Daly came home by the midnight tarin. Rain at dark.

1 Apr 1893      In Cowra all day. Heavy rain during the night and up to 12 o’clock today. Races on Morongla Creek. S McInnes came from the Sugar Loaf copper mine near Walli.

2 Apr 1893      Easter Sunday. In Cowra. Cloudy and cool.

3 Apr 1893      Easter Monday. Caledonian sports on the Cowra Showgrounds. I assisted Mrs Daly in the booth. We did fairly well. I saw David Hood. Light showers and cold.

4 Apr 1893      Easter Tuesday. I stayed in Cowra all day. Assisted Mrs Daly to pack up at the booth. Saw D Hood. D Donnelly gone to Sydney.

5 Apr 1893      I drove out to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim  and brought six sheets of 10 foot galvanised iron.

6 Apr 1893      Went with the buggy to the Pines, and got some battens. James O’Shaughnessy put the iron on my hut. T Anthony came, and J.O’Connor and Cooper. Cool day.

7 Apr 1893      Not doing any work. James O’Shaughnessy and Jack Sinclair working on D Donnelly’s claim.

8 Apr 1893      I drove in to Cowra. James O’Shaughnessy came with me. Great shower near McLeod’s, Neila Creek.

9 Apr 1893      Sunday. At the Australian Hotel all day.

10 Apr 1893    I have James Keith Morrice, 374 Kent Street, Sydney, summonsed for £17.11.5 wages on Anthony’s Hill. He appeared and got garden to watch the case. The case dismissed. Should have sued him in Frogmore. M T Phillips on the spree. Had to get Flannery. Wise and Jeanerette speak on free trade tonight.

11 Apr 1893    James O’Shaughnessy rode my old black horse to Broula and got the old piebald horse out of Dwyer’s paddock. I got some timber from Francis and an old sash from P Murray. T Nash came from Braidwood to manage the sluicing claim on Anthony’s Hill but the Company is not prepared to start yet.

12 Apr 1893    I got a letter from J.K.Morrice, 374 Kent Street, Sydney, asking me three questions. I replied at once. I started at 10 o’clock for Anthony’s hill. James rode the old piebald. Got there at dark. Paid harris brothers £1.16.0 for sheep.

13 Apr 1893    I rode the piebald to a gate about a mile above Reedy Creek with the Burrowa River. John O’Connor promised to meet me there. He did come in sight of the gate but did not see me. He turned back and went home. I made a door.

14 Apr 1893    John O’Connor came to the camp early this morning. I rode with him up to his quartz claim on the right hand creek, about three miles up it from the Burrowa River. Came back down the Burrowa River past Prosser’s, D Anthony’s, and P Stinson’s. O’Connor turned off for his place. I got to the camp after dark. Very much like rain.

15 Apr 1893    I put a sash in the hut and finished plastering it. We got a sheep from Harris, Bennetts Springs. A cricket match there today. James O’Shaughnessy and Jack Sinclair working for John Chivers’ claim, half day, and D Donnelly’s claim, half day. A light shower of rain.

16 Apr 1893    Sunday. After 12 o’clock, I drove in to Cowra. Heavy shower of rain at the railway bridge. After dark, a hail storm. Very cold.

17 Apr 1893    I got a letter from J.K.Morrice. On account of the E S and A Bank closing, he would not be able to pay me for a few days.

18 Apr 1893    James O’Shaughnessy followed the old piebald horse along the road to Mount Collins. We fenced in the river so that he could not get away again.

19 Apr 1893    I started for Cowra at 12 o’clock and got there at 6 o’clock.

20 Apr 1893    I drove out to the Sugar Loaf near the Belubla river to Sam McInnes’ and Joe Brown’s camp. They are sinking there for copper. I have a share of the claim. I put my horse in Joe brown’s paddock.

21 Apr 1893    I went out prospecting towards Licking Hole Creek. I found some wood opal. After dinner, I went to a fossil creek near the old caves and got some oyster fossil.

22 Apr 1893    McInnes, Brown and I went prospecting. Brown went home. McInnes and I went to the old caves and got some fossil bones, and down the creek to the graphite.

23 Apr 1893    Sunday. S McInnes, J. Brown Sr, Stephen Brown and I walked to the Dead Man’s caves at Taplo on the Belubla River. We went down two caves. We came back across the hills and got some fossil shells.

24 Apr 1893    S McInnes looking for more opals. We found some with fire in them. In the evening, we went to the back of the Sugar Loaf.

25 Apr 1893    Raining. Sam and I walked over to Joseph brown to assist him to kill a cow. He changed his mind. A letter from Minnie O’Shaughnessy, Cowra,that the Australian Joint Stock Bank, Cowra. had closed. And a copy of a letter from J.K.Morrice, 374 Kent Street, Sydney, that he would pay me in ten days.

26 Apr 1893    S McInnes and I had another search for opals, and then went to the Licking Hole Creek to get some samples of graphite. We got some oyster fossils. Miss Brown married to Michael Egan, Two Mile Creek. Thunder storm after dark. Good rain.

27 Apr 1893    I walked to Taplo, near the stone huts. I got a good assortment of fossils. Sam went prospecting for opals on the west side of the Sugar Loaf. Raining after dark. Cloudy day.

28 Apr 1893    Sam McInnes and I went to Taplo and got some more fossils. Showers all day.

29 Apr 1893    Sam McInnes, J.Brown and his son Stephen and I started for the Needles on a high point on the north side of the Belubula River. There are two tunnels driven into the hill near the top under the basalt. One tunnel 500 feet, and on the opposite side of the hill, another tunnel 250 feet. We got some fair prospects from the tunnels. The parties that did work here put an iron chute from the top of the sandstone cliff down to the Belubula River.

30 Apr 1893    Sunday. At the camp all day. S McInnes went to the stone huts to show the Rotherys through the caves.

1 May 1893     Sam McInnes and I got our horses and went to walli, and followed the Canowindra road past Egan’s old public house about a mile, and went through a gate on the road to Burnt Yards and Flyer’s Creek, crossed the Belubula and Two Mile Creek. Two crushing mills at Burnt Yards. Not much doing at the reef. 6 miles to Yankee Point on Flyer’s Creek. Here, Bright and McKenzie have just started a crushing plant, crushing from their own reef. About 5 reefs taken up here, and some sluicing claims working for many years. Stayed at Davidson’s camp.

2 May 1893     Went round again this morning and had a look at some more reefs and a sluicing claim owned by Julian. I got some black sand from him. W Crowe’s 4 acre lease appears to be the richest claim here at present. We started at half past 11 o’clock and got to Joe Brown’s at dark. Stayed there and had tea and walked two miles to the camp. Raining most all day.

3 May 1893     S McInnes and I walked to the fossil hill near the stone huts and found some more fossils.

4 May 1893     S McInnes and Joe Brown commenced work. I brought my horse from Brown’s paddock and kept him tied up all night.

5 May 1893     I started at half past 8 o’clock and drove past The Islands. A light shower. Got to Cowra at half past 2 o’clock.

6 May 1893     In Cowra all day. Grace  O’Shaughnessy came back from Grenfell a week ago. Living up at P Murray’s now.

7 May 1893     Sunday. In Cowra all day. J. O’Connor came to Robert Daly’s.

8 May 1893     In Cowra. Wrote a letter to J.K.Morrice to forward me by next Monday the amount due to me or I will take proceedings. Sent a parcel to the Mines Department for assay, and a letter.

9 May 1893     I drove up to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim on my way to Frogmore. The Sinclairs left Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim and took two boards from the claim.

10 May 1893   At the camp all day. Heavy thunderstorm.

11 May 1893   Making a body for my buggy. Light showers.

12 May 1893   Making the body.Light showers. James O’Shaughnessy shot a duck.

13 May 1893   I drove James O’Shaughnessy in to Cowra. Stayed at the Australian Hotel.

14 May 1893   Sunday. Up at John Connelly’s for dinner.

15 May 1893   I surrendered my permit for Anthony’s Hill Sluicing Company back to the Department. The shareholders would not pay me for work done by me on the ground, so I had to abandon the ground for want of means. I got Mr Phillips to summon J.K.Morrice for his share of wages on Anthony’s Hill £17.11.5. A meeting of the Sugar Loaf shareholders.

16 May 1893   I drove James O’Shaughnessy out to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim on my way to Frogmore. Commercial banking Company of Sydney closed its doors this morning. Cold day.

17 May 1893   A great fog and frost. I got the two horses and brought them to camp.

18 May 1893   I got the piebald horse and rode to Harris brothwers, bennetts Springs, on to Hovell Creek, John O’Connor’s place. Had dinner. John O’Connor lent me a fresh horse and he and I rode within 3 miles of Frogmore to 2 mineral leases. One taken up by some Burrowa men and the other by a man from Adelaide. Both leases taken up for wolfram. No70 and No71. A good indication cropping out for 200 yards. Not being worked for 12 months. We got some specimens and made out on to the main road at Petty’s selection after dark. Got to O’Connor’s at 10 o’clock.

19 May 1893   Had breakfast at O’Connor’s and got to Anthony’s Hill at 12 o’clock.

20 May 1893   At the camp. getting ready to go to Flyer’s Creek.

21 May 1893   Sunday. I drove James O’Shaughnessy in to Cowra in the evening.

22 May 1893   I have J.K.Morrice summonsed today for £17.11.5. Wages at Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim. I had M T Phillips, Solicitor. The bench said that they had no jurisdiction, that the work was done outside the Cowra District. Gave Mr Donnelly some wolfram.

23 May 1893   Got a telegram that No71 lease on wolfram was cancelled and that No70 was held by Hendery and party.

24 May 1893   Queen’s Birthday. Tot and Polly Daly, Minnie, Grace, and Katevv, Miss Fox, Miss Mulally, Miss Muir, Jack Chivers and others drove out to Broula to a picnic. James and I drove out to mining reserve on Canowindra road. A letter from Mr Donnelly about the wolfram.

25 May 1893   Up at John Connelly’s all day. White frost.

27 May 1893   I sent a letter to the Minister for Mines to have Portion No70, now held by hendery and party, near frogmore, as a mineral lease for wolfram, cancelled for non-fulfillment of Labour Conditions. Commenced to rain at dark.

28 May 1893   Raining all night. I made out an application for mineral lease No70 near Frogmore. Put all my fossils in a box. Up to John Connelly’s for tea. Sunday.

29 May 1893   Raining most all day.

30 May 1893   Duff, new Governor, came to Sydney. Sent a letter to Burrowa for a map, County of King. Parish of Alton.

31 May 1893   Went with Harry Henderson to a coursing match on James Ousby’s farm near Holmwood. Light showers. River rising.

1 Jun 1893      Mrs P Walsh Jnr of Kikiamah died at Young this morning.[2]Light showers all day.

2 Jun 1893      Mrs P Walsh buried at Young this morning. I drove my buggy to Cropper and landsdown to put in new boxes, but they had none to fit. Light showers.

3 Jun 1893      I got a letter from the Mines Department to say that Hendery mineral lease No70 for mining for wolfram within three miles of Frogmore was in course of cancellation.

4 Jun 1893      William Cummins died at his sister’s, Miss Cummins, at 9 o’clock. Up at John Connelly’s place. I wrote a letter to John O’Connor, Hovell’s Creek. Real cold, cloudy day.

5 Jun 1893      W Cummins taken by train to Bathurst to be buried there. I was at the funeral as far as the railway Station. I paid P Murray £1.10.0 on account, and I paid Hugh McLeod £2.0.0 on account.

6 Jun 1893      I got my horse and drove up to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim on the Burrowa River to put a body on my buggy. James O’Shaughnessy rode up. John O’Connor came to the camp after we got there. Stephen Goldsborough Alford died last night.

27 Jun 1893    James got 9 opossums. He set 20 traps in Joe Smith’s paddock on the west side of the junction of Breakfast Creek with the Burrowa River.

28 Jun 1893    James got 8 opossums. Tom Anthony came. Light showers all day.

29 Jun 1893    James and I looking after the horses until 11 o’clock. We found the piebald in the little paddock above the dam. James rode him to get the opossums. I took the old body off the buggy. Frost.

30 Jun 1893    James got 12 opossum skins. I put the new body on the buggy to see how it would fit. I took it off again and put the old one on. White frost this morning.

1 Jul 1893       James O’Shaughnessy rode the piebald to Cowra. I painted the seat of the body and made a piece that fitted on to the spring, and the body is bolted down on it.

2 Jul 1893       I got my horse and James and I started at 11 o’clock. A great fog up to ten o’clock. James went from Cowra to Gray’s camp at Wattamondara for a man named Thomas Nash. He is going to sluice for us at Anthony’s Hill. Very cold day.

3 Jul 1893       I took my buggy to Cropper and Landsdown to get in a set of boxes. They had only two boxes for the hind wheels. Paid them. MT Phillipsgained his mandamus to try my case and J.K.Morrice in Cowra. Great fog and frost up to 1 o’clock today.

4 Jul 1893       Started at 4 o’clock. Nash came in the buggy with me. James riding. We got to Anthony’s Hill at 3 o’clock. Snow falling in Cowra at 7 o’clock this morning.

5 Jul 1893       Fixing up my buggy all day. James and Nash fixing outlet at the dam.

6 Jul 1893       Working at the buggy. James and Nash commenced to cut a race to catch the gold in. Tom Anthony came. Cold wind from the south.

9 Jul 1893       Sunday. After dinner, went down to the junction of Breakfast Creek and the Burrowa River. I followed the creek up, and prospected it up to Harry’s Creek, and up that creek.

10 Jul 1893     I met the coach at the crossing place and sent a letter to John O’Connor, Hovell’s Creek. I got my newspapers and repaired the gate from our claim to the crossing place.

11 Jul 1893     Making tan liquor for the opossum skins. I painted the buggy. James and nash sluicing. Fog this morning.

12 Jul 1893     I finished all the opossum skins. James and Nash sluicing.

13 Jul 1893     I got a piece of sawn timber from the river and cut a cross piece for the front of the buggy.

14 Jul 1893     I took the front carriage off the buggy and took out the old cross piece and got a new one ready. John O’Connor came. Cloudy day. Raining most all night.

15 Jul 1893     Fixing up the buggy. Cooper and jack harris came. Nash and James sluicing. Burrowa River not crossable.

16 Jul 1893     We got two sheep from Harris Brothers. I finished my buggy. River falling. Fog up to 10 o’clock. Fine day.

17 Jul 1893     I walked down to the Burrowa River crossing place. Mail coach could not cross. Jack Harris rode across and brought over the mail. I got a letter from John Connelly that No70 mineral lease for wolfram near Frogmore would be cancelled on 28th of this month.

18 Jul 1893     I made some tan for the opossum skins and put some break blocks on the buggy. Cooper’s boys came. Fine day.

19 Jul 1893     At the camp most all day. John O’Connor came. Cold day. Light showers.

20 Jul 1893     Nash and I took levels for a new race from the left hand gully going to Harris’. In the evening, James and I cut the race about 5 chains long. Cooper came. Burrowa River rising. Cold. Showers all day.

21 Jul 1893     At the camp. Wallaby drive at harris brothers, Bennetts Springs. Burrowa River falling. Cold day.

22 Jul 1893     River rose again last night. We could not get to Cowra. River falling again this evening.

23 Jul 1893     Sunday. River rose again last night. James and I pegging out skins. Fog this morning. Fine evening.

24 Jul 1893     James and I drove in to Cowra. Water ran into the buggy  when crossing the river. John Connelly and I saw D Donnelly about No70 wolfram lease. They agreed to work it under mineral prospecting claim for a month, and then they would pay for a lease.

25 Jul 1893     James and I came to Anthony’s Hill. A cold day.

26 Jul 1893     Harris Brothers brought two sheep. I got all the opossum skins out of the tan and was drying them. A white frost this morning.

27 Jul 1893     I rode the old piebald horse up to John O’Connor’s place on Hovell’s Creek. I went across the hill on to the Reedy Creek road. This road comes out on Hovell’s Creek at the Catholic Chapel. Real cold day. I stayed at O’Connor’s all night.

28 Jul 1893     I went in the buggy with John O’Connor and his son Thomas O’Connor came on horseback. We drove within 4 miles of Frogmore. We left the horse and buggy at Tommy Jones’ place. We walked across Mr Downe’s selection onto a forest Reserve No 2070 and pegged out two 40 acre mineral leases for wolfram, formerly held by Hendery and others, now open to be taken up at 2 o’clock today. We got back to O’Connor’s place after dark. Very cold day.

29 Jul 1893     I started at 8 o’clock and came across the mountain at the back of John O’Connor’s house to the Reedy Creek road and turned to the right again by Dowers old house and over the mountain to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim.

30 Jul 1893     Sunday. I drove James in to Cowra. He is going to take charge of Costello’s store at Koorawatha for P Squire, Storekeeper, Cowra. Fine day.

31 Jul 1893     I wrote a letter to John O’Connor, Hovell’s Creek, for him to put a man on in my place on the wolfram lease, as I could not go there myself. I am going to work for James O’Shaughnessy on his Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim whe he was at Koorawatha. I got to Anthony’s Hill at 4 o’clock.

5 Aug 1893      Sluicing all day. Raining during the night and cold showers all day. Tom Anthony came and brought a letter from John Connelly of Cowra that I was to meet him and D Donnelly at Harris brothers, Bennetts Springs at 10 o’clock today. I only got the letter at 4 o’clock, too late. We got two sheep from Harris.

6 Aug 1893      Sunday. At the camp all day. Put away all the tanned opossum skins.

7 Aug 1893      Nash and I sluicing all day. I got a letter from John O’Connor. He and his son are representing the wolfram lease near Frogmore. A letter from James O’Shaughnessy , Costello’s Store, Koorawatha. Raining last night. Cloudy day.

8 Aug 1893      Nash and I commenced to clean up. White frost and fog.

9 Aug 1893      Sluicing down the races, Tom Anthony came and brought some specimens. White frost.

10 Aug 1893    Cleaning up the races all day and took some of the paving out of the main race.

11 Aug 1893    Finished taking out the paving. We made a sluice box 15+8 long and 12 inches wide, 5 inches deep. This box is stoned and the wash is put twice through it. We took some of the wash with the barrow out of the main race and put it in a small paddock.

12 Aug 1893    Nash and I finished cleaning up the races. Some of the stuff we have to puddle in a tub. Frost and fog this morning.

13 Aug 1893    Sunday. I rode over to John O’Connor’s, Hovell’s creek. He came a part of the way back with me. Nash at the camp.

14 Aug 1893    We puddled some of the wash in a tub, and then ranthe lot through a 15 feet box as described further back. We made a suction? Ripple with hoop iron and put it at the lower end of the box, and the rest of the box stoned. Nash fed the box and I made a hole in the ground at the end of the boxes and shovelled the tailings out of this hole in a heap to be put through again. I walked down to our mailbox. Nothing came.

15 Aug 1893    We put all the tailing through again for gold and I again put them back in a heap to get the black sand. We made a small box 12 feet long, 6 inches wide, sides 3 inches high and put fine flannel on the bottom. We had two buckets with black sand and gold. Feed the black sand with the hand and catch it in a bucket at the end of the box and put it through again. John O’Connor came on his way home from Cowra. A few showers after dinner and heavy rain after dark.

16 Aug 1893    Nash made a box 7 feet long, 2 feet wide at one end and 1 foot at the other. A 2 inch ripple at the lower end. I fed this box and Nash used the sluice fork at the wide end. About every barrow load, we would take out the black sand. We again put this black sand through to finish. We had to use quicksilver to separate the gold from the black sand.

17 Aug 1893    Nash and I sluicing the black sand. We finished, and filled one tub. Real white frost this morning.

18 Aug 1893    I drove Nash in to Cowra. I sent a telegram to James O’Shaughnessy at Koorawatha to come in to Cowra tomorrow.

19 Aug 1893    James O’Shaughnessy came by the 10 o’clock train. Nash gave him the gold. 6 oz 3 dwt 20 grams. He paid Nash 6 weeks and one day £18.10.0. J.K.Morrice has given each shareholder in Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim that he intends to enter an action for £400.

20 Aug 1893    Sunday. John Connelly and I drove out to the old Buck qquartz near George Lockyer’s at Holmwood. Raining this morning.

21 Aug 1893    I drove out to Anthony’s Hill. Very sick. Cramps in my stomach. A cloudy day.

22 Aug 1893    Making tan liquor for some opossum skins. Cloudy day.

23 Aug 1893    D Donnelly and John Connelly drove up at 1 o’clock. I have to show them the wolfram lease near Frogmore. I got my horse and crossed over the mountains on to Reedy Creek road and came out on Hovell’s Creek at the Catholic Chapel. I got to Frogmore before them. Stayed at Castles’ Hotel.

24 Aug 1893    John O’Connor came this morning and we all went back to the wolfram mine. Connelly and Donnelly refused to pay for a lease. They went back to Cowra. O’Connor went to Burrowa. I came back the short cut to Anthony’s Hill. Sluicing claim on the Burrowa River.

25 Aug 1893    I drove in to Cowra. I got a letter from J.K.Morrice, Sydney that he will take action at once if we don’t come to an amicable settlement about Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim on the Burrowa River.

26 Aug 1893    I drove out to the 17 mile tree on the Grenfell Road. Young Bartlett, clerk in the Roads Office, showed me a piece of quartz, covered with gold, found by him when measuring some maintenance heaps on the Grenfell road.I could not find any quartz like the specimen. Camped at the limestone quarry all night. A heavy shower in the night.

27 Aug 1893    Sunday. I drove to my hut at Broula and took off five sheets of iron and came on to Cowra. Light showers.

28 Aug 1893    I went to M T Phillips’ office. He is going to see if he can summons J.K.Morrice in the Warden’s Court. He could not find the agreement. Mr and Mrs Nash went by coach to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim.

29 Aug 1893    I drove out to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim.

30 Aug 1893    Nash and I commenced work. We paved the race. Great rain last night and a heavy shower at 10 o’clock this morning.

31 Aug 1893    Nash and I sluicing all day. John O’Connor came. He brought his bill for my share of expense on No70 mineral lease for wolfram. I paid him £1.10.0 on account.

9 Sep 1893      Nash and I sluicing all day. Cooper’s boys came. I hobbled old Paddy the horse. I went to the letter box. No letters.

10 Sep 1893    Sunday. I rode Paddy the horse in to Cowra. I saw Mr Phillips. My case with J.K.Morrice will come off on the 18th if the summons can be served. I put my horse in Daly’s paddock. A letter from J K Morrice  of 374 kent Street Sydney. Solicitor giving 7 days to settle the £400 before taking action in equity.

11 Sep 1893    I started at 5 o’clock from Cowra and got to Anthony’s Hill at 10 o’clock Putting up a blacksmith’s forge in the evening, Heavy shower at 12 o’clock. Got a sheep from Harris Brothers. Got my Town and Country Journal and a letter from James O’Shaughnessy Koorawatha.

12 Sep 1893    I finished the forge and pointed a lot of picks. I got my horse and tied him up and fed him to get an early start to Cowra.

13 Sep 1893    I drove in to Cowra by 10 o’clock. Great procession from Faster’s Hotel to the new bridge,. Kidd, Postmaster General, opened the bridge for traffic. The two Cowra members were there, DCJ Donnelly and Jeanerette. 24 of the Military band from Sydney played. A light shower kept the people away from the Show. Poor exhibits there. The Band played at the ground all day.

14 Sep 1893    Great crowd of people on the Showground today. Kate  O’Shaughnessy came with Mr and Miss Fox from Mount McDonald.

15 Sep 1893    The cattle sales and the buckjumping contests did not come off.

16 Sep 1893    D Donnelly drove up to Wilson’s at Bumbaldry. Young Wilson promised to show us a copper lode as samee as the specimen he showed us. He showed us a place aboul a mile on the Grenfell side of Bumbaldry where he broke it off a piece of sandstone. We left, came to my hut at Broula and brought 4 sheets of iron.

17 Sep 1893    Sunday. I drove up to Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim. A good shower after getting to the camp.

18 Sep 1893    Nash and I sluicing. Went to letter box. Nothing there.

19 Sep 1893    Nash and I sluicing all day.

20 Sep 1893    Nash and I cutting a race from the lower one (race), up to the high one.

21 Sep 1893    Nash and I sluicing from the high race. Old Bluey, the kangaroo dog, died last night. His liver was all swollen and black. Fine day.

22 Sep 1893    Sluicing all day. Fine weather.

23 Sep 1893    I got my horse after dinner and rode over to John O’Connor’s, Hovell’s Creek and stayed there all night.

24 Sep 1893    Sunday. John O’Connor and I rode to his wolfram lease and back. I came to Anthony’s Hill.

25 Sep 1893    Nash and I sluicing.  John Connelly drove Mr George. He is representing in Hong Kong at Mount McDonald. I got a letter from James O’Shaughnessy and one from W R Watt at Bumbaldry, inviting me to stay at his place and prospect about there. Mr Phillips, Manager of the City bank, Carcoar was murdered last Sunday night. Mrs nearly killed and a lady visitor named Miss cavanagh murdered by a man that wanted to rob the Bank. Phillips did not have the keys.

26 Sep 1893    Nash and I sluicing. Raining all night.

28 Sep 1893    Nash and I sluicing up to 3 o’clock. We took the barrow up to the dam and put some more earth on the top. Fog and frost.

30 Sep 1893    Nash and I sluicing all day. We killed a snake.

1 Oct 1893      Sunday. At the camp. A few light showers and thunder at a distance.

2 Oct 1893      Nash and I sluicing all day. I got my post. A letter from Minnie. A young Glasson from Blayney was apprehended in Cowra and committed to Bathurst for the murder of Phillips in Carcoar and the murder of Miss Cavanagh and the attempted murder of Mrs Phillips.

3 Oct 1893      Nash and I sluicing up to 3 o’clock. We went up to the dam and cut some races into it. Could not find the horses. Light showers.

4 Oct 1893      Nash and I sluicing. My horses in Smith’s paddock. Repairing fence in small paddock above the dam to put the horses in. Cloudy.

5 Oct 1893      Nash and I sluicing all day.

6 Oct 1893      Nash and I sluicing. I got my horse out of Joseph Smith’s paddock at the junction of Breakfast Creek and put him in the little paddock of Harris’ above Bolter’s spring.

8 Oct 1893      Sunday. I drove in to Cowra. The old Cowra bridge pulled down. Great storm. No rain. One of Mrs Hyam’s?? twins died.

9 Oct 1893      Stayed in Cowra all day. A meeting of Anthony’s Hill shareholders at Poole’s Hotel. Boxall, Poole, Connelly, James O’Shaughnessy and me. I presented my bill for work done on Anthony’s Hill. £18.18.10. I got £13.1.0. James O’Shaughnessy going to take stock at DCJ Donnelly’s.

10 Oct 1893    I drove up to Anthony’s Hill. Great storm and a little rain last night. I paid John Chivers 15/-.

11 Oct 1893    Nash and I sluicing all day.

12 Oct 1893    Nash and I sluicing all day. I paid Harris £2.7.0 for sheep. Hot day.

13 Oct 1893    Nash and I sluicing. The old piebald came to the camp. I put him in the dam paddock with Black Paddy.

14 Oct 1893    After dinner, I rode in to Cowra. We had of the old Anthony’s Hill shareholders. It was agreed to sell all the plant of the first shareholders on the 23rd Inst.  When sold, all expenses incurred during their time to be paid out of the proceeds.

15 Oct 1893    Sunday. I rode up to Anthony’s Hill.

16 Oct 1893    Nash and I sluicing.

17 Oct 1893    Nash and I commenced to clean up the races. Great wind this evening. I made a place for the horse to drink in the paddock.

18 Oct 1893    We got all the races cleaned up and commenced to sluice through boxes.  The two Misses Harris came with two of their brothers. South winds all day.

19 Oct 1893    Nash and I put all the wash through the boxes twice for gold.

20 Oct 1893    Nash and I ran the wash through again and got all the black sand. Nearly a tub full, and reduced the gold and black sand to two buckets.

21 Oct 1893    Nash and I finished cleaning up. We only got 6 oz 18dwt of fine gold. Cold this morning and hot in the evening.

22 Oct 1893    Sunday. I drove in to Cowra. Much like rain.

23 Oct 1893    I went to M T Phillips’ office and showed him a copy of an agreement between the Anthony’s Hill shareholders and J K Morrice , 374 Kent Street, Sydney. The plant at Anthony’s Hill sold today. at 3 o’clock by Charles Stibbard by order of the shareholders to James O’Shaughnessy for the sum of £11.0.0 cash.

24 Oct 1893    I stayed in Cowra. Thomas Nash and his wife came from Anthony’s Hill. James O’Shaughnessy paid him £22.10.0 wages and paid me £3.16.0 wages.

25 Oct 1893    James and I drove out to Anthony’s Hill.  Hot day.

26 Oct 1893    James and I paved the race and cut a race to bring the water near to where Frazer was sluicing.

27 Oct 1893    James and I commenced to sluice. Cleaning up the old race in the evening.

28 Oct 1893    James and I sluicing. Commenced to rain at 10 o’clock. Continued up to 3 o’clock.

29 Oct 1893    Sunday. James rode up to Harris Brothers, Bennetts Springs and ordered a sheep. I was taking opossum skins out of the tans. Fine day.

31 Oct 1893    James finished the old race, and let the water along it. I was sluicing all day.

1 Nov 1893     James cut a race near where Taylor was working and let the water into a main race that I cut. Sluicing. Killed a snake.

2 Nov 1893     James and I sluicing all day. Very hot weather.

3 Nov 1893     James and I sluicing. Great wind in the night. A few drops of rain.

4 Nov 1893     Sluicing all day.

5 Nov 1893     Sunday. Cutting opossum skins into sizes to make rug. Joe Smith gave us notice not to sluice into the Burrowa River. Ordered a sheep from Harris. Hot day.

6 Nov 1893     James and I sluicing. I got my newspapers. Hot day.

8 Nov 1893     Sluicing all day. We got a sheep from Harris. Great storm after dark, and heavy rain.

9 Nov 1893     James and I sluicing. Raining most all day.

11 Nov 1893   James and I drove in to Cowra. I went to the sale of the old Cowra bridge and bought four small lots.

12 Nov 1893   Sunday. Heavy rain last night. We started for Anthony’s Hill at 10 o’clock.

13 Nov 1893   Sluicing all day. Raining last night. I got my papers. Great wind and rain at dark.

14 Nov 1893   James and I sluicing. Tom Anthony came.

15 Nov 1893   James and I sluicing. Grace  O’Shaughnessy went by train on her way to Milton near Ulladulla on the South Coast.

16 Nov 1893   Sluicing all day. Warm weather.

17 Nov 1893   James and I sluicing. Grace  O’Shaughnessy arrived at Ulladulla at 9 o’clock.

18 Nov 1893   Sluicing all day. Harris brought us a sheep. Thunder and lightning last night and great thunder this evening.

19 Nov 1893   Sunday. At the camp all day. James and I hobbled the old piebald horse.

20 Nov 1893   James O’Shaughnessy and I sluicing. I got my papers and a letter from Minnie O’Shaughnessy.

21 Nov 1893   Sluicing. I shot two hares.

22 Nov 1893   James and I sluicing.

23 Nov 1893   James and I sluicing. The lame?? Harris came this evening.

24 Nov 1893   Sluicing. Great wind and rain at dark for half an hour.

29 Nov 1893   Sluicing. Bertie Glasson hanged in Bathurst Gaol today for the murder of Mr Phillips, Manager of the City bank, Carcoar, and a Miss Cavanagh at the same time and place.

30 Nov 1893   James and I sluicing all day. High dry winds. No sign of rain.

1 Dec 1893     James and I sluicing. Hot day

2 Dec 1893     James and I drove in to Cowra. I saw John Connelly. He has paid £3.0.0 call to the Sugar Loaf copper near Walli. Two monthly calls of £2.0.0 each call.

3 Dec 1893     Sunday. James and I drove out to Anthony’s Hill.

4 Dec 1893     James and I sluicing all day. Got a sheep from Harris.

5 Dec 1893     Sluicing. Dry windy day. Digging out wash. We did not put on water today, not being enough water in the dam. A bush fire in Dixon’s and George Smith’s paddocks. Hot windy day.

6 Dec 1893     James and I sluicing.

7 Dec 1893     James and I sluicing. Hot dry weather.

8 Dec 1893     Sluicing. Very hot day.

24 Dec 1893   Sunday. Joe Smith came. I paid him 12/- – my horse in his paddock. Great heat. A little rain and thunder at 5 o’clock.

25 Dec 1893   Christmas day. At Anthony’s Hill sluicing claim all day. James O’Shaughnessy came with the horse and buggy from Cowra. I got my papers from the letter box. Good shower after dark.

26 Dec 1893   James and I sluicing all day.

27 Dec 1893   I was fixing up the boxes. James cleaning up the races.

28 Dec 1893   Raining all day.

29 Dec 1893   James O’Shaughnessy and I sluicing. Light showers.

30 Dec 1893   James and I sluicing all the scrapings through two boxes- one, 16 feet box, one foot wide at the bottom. The top box 7 feet long, 2 feet wide at the top end and 1 foot wide at the lower end. I forked at the wide end. James fed.

31 Dec 1893   Nash and I At the camp all day. My birthday (tomorrow). 59 years old.
