  • Ship 594t. Built Bengal 1802. J. Coghill Master. Matthew Anderson Surgeon. B & W drawing  and colour photo of painting at Bedervale.
  • Cork 21.6.1822 – Rio – Sydney 8.11.1822. 190 male prisoners. 1 died. 189 landed Sydney.
  • Indent lists Edward (sic) Markham, Age 20, Convicted of ‘Offence under Insurrection Act’ at Special Sessions 1822,Co. Limerick (actually in Limerick City FCM), Seven years, Ploughman, Native place Co. Limerick. Assigned (along with Thomas Shaughnessy) on arrival to James Byrne of Appin. Reel AO2749, last item on the reel.
  • Surgeon Superintendent Journal has no reference to Markham (or Shaughnessy, or Neville). Surgeon’s Journal  AJCP reel 3202.

Other ships in 1822.

  • In 1822, 15 convict ships arrived: 1 from Downs (to Hobart), 4 from Cork, 11 from England. 11 of the 15 came to Sydney, the other 4 turned around in Hobart, although a few of the Sydney ships came via Hobart.

  • The Mangles made 9 trips to Australia. The only ship to make more trips was the Surrey, which made 11 trips. Mangles as follows:
