My link with John Keegan (Abt 1816-1883) and Hanorah Donohoe (1816-1892) who arrived on the ‘William Metcalfe’ in 1843, is that they are my great great grandparents on my mother’s side. My grandparents were their granddaughter Mary Ann (1874-1948), married to William McGuiness (1865-1941).
This story is being developed. In the meantime, herewith the first few generations. Errors and omissions gratefully received.
JOHN and HANORAH KEEGAN
John Keegan married Hanorah DONOHOE 19 August,1840 at Athy, County Kildare, the next county to Carlow. Hanorah was the daughter of Michael Donohoe and Catherine Slater and she was born ca. 1816 Athy, which is pronounced “a tye” and “Cill Dara”.is gaelic Irish for Kildare. Like Dublin and Carlow, Athy has a river running right through the village, adding to the charm of the place.
John and Hanorah had a son James who was born 7 July 1841.
When James was two, John and Hanorah emigrated to Australia as Bounty Immigrants paying forty six pounds fifteen shillings for their passage. Eighteen pounds fourteen each for themselves and nine pounds seven shillings for James.
John’s father’s name was Patrick and we believe his mother’s name was Elizabeth.
According tothe shipping records, John resided with his father Patrick at Kent Street Sydney on arrival. We have not been able to find the record of Patrick’s arrival in Australia or even if he brought his wife.
John and Hanorah with their son James went to Penrith and farmed the land where they settled for quite a few years having more family. They then went to Bathurst where they both died and were buried. John died 24 September 1883. Hanorah died 6 September 1892. John was 68 years old and Hanorah was 77 years old.
