1828 O’Leary – Co. Kildare, Ireland

Two O’Leary sons married my great aunts, two of the three daughters of my g g grandfather Edmund Markham. Hence my interest in including this family on this site.

• • Frederick Joseph (1840- 1889) married Ellen Agnes Markham (1841 – 1920), and
  • Patrick James O’Leary (1841 – 1923) married Mary Markham (1852 – 1932)

 

Christopher , their father, was born in The Curragh, County Kildare in 1812. He arrived in New South Wales on the “Mangles” on 2 June 1828. He was then only 16 and had been tried six months earlier and, described as an apprentice shoemaker, sentenced to 7 years transportation for “theft of a handkerchief”. He was apparently assigned to an employer at Wilberforce. Movements between 1834 and 1839 are obscure but employed for part of this
period by Dr. GIBSON of TIRANNA as an overseer.

Christopher met his future wife Bridget Frost. It is possible that Bridget was also employed by the Gibsons. They werem arried St. Peter and Paul Chapel, Goulburn, on 31 July 1839 and then employed at Dr. Gibson’s other station “Bogolong” .

More research is necessary to outline his life in the Colony. I am happy to receive contributions.
