1 Jan 1898      Mr Squire and James Middlemiss drove out and took some fruit. Andrew McClymont died.

2 Jan 1898      Sunday. I rode to Broula Hill Silver Mine. The mine closed down. All the men paid off. A goanna kill my magpie in his cage. Mrs Alfred Whittaker died.

3 Jan 1898      Fitzgerald’s steam machine thrashing for Gleeson. Young Dwyer drove Matty Walsh and two other girls and took all the apricots away. Mrs Huckle mother of W. Huckle Mountain View Broula died.

4 Jan 1898      I rode around the top paddock. Hot day.

5 Jan 1898      Thrashing machine finished Gleeson’s wheat. 169 bags off 60 acres. Great fire at P.Cass’s Senr. Hot winds.

6 Jan 1898      I was painting. Mr Squire brought old brown mare and foal out.

7 Jan 1898      Gleeson sold all his wheat to S. Wright 3/6. Very hot day.

8 Jan 1898      Repairing fence. I rode into Cowra. I got back at 9 o’clock

9 Jan 1898      Sunday. 100 in the Shade. 108 in Cowra.

10 Jan 1898    Repairing fence. 95 in the shade all day.

11 Jan 1898    Repairing brush fence. 96 in shade. Mrs T. Brown died.

12 Jan 1898    Straining wire. Starr and his son Walter came to fence. Commenced to rain from the north. Mrs M.T. Pratt died. Woodstock.

13 Jan 1898    Raining all night. 174 points. I killed a sheep. A letter from Mr Squire to take all the sheep to his paddock in Cowra.

14 Jan 1898    I kept 25 sheep for rations and took the remainder to the Cemetery paddock Cowra. I went to Mr Squire’s store and got a pair boots.

15 Jan 1898    I ploughed the garden and harrowed it. 95 in shade.

16 Jan 1898    Sunday at home. Very hot.

17 Jan 1898    Working in the garden. Walter Starr and brother finished fence.

18 Jan 1898    Working in the garden. The two Starrs left. Very hot day.

19 Jan 1898    Straining wire from stockyard to horse paddock. Great wind.

21 Jan 1898    Getting old fence posts in line. Mr and Mrs Squire drove out.

22 Jan 1898    I rode into Cowra. Paid P. Murray’s bill 12/9. Mr P. Squire gone to New Zealand. Got back to Yarra at 11 o’clock.

5 Feb 1898      Fixing up old fence. I rode in to Cowra. Gave McDonald an order to make a mineral show case. 103 in the shade in Cowra.

7 Feb 1898      I got the fence ready for straining. Great smoke and heat.

8 Feb 1898      I was straining wire all day. Smoke and heat.

9 Feb 1898      I cut some pines in James Cass’ paddock and carted them.

10 Feb 1898    I put up a hen roost. Great smoke from the south.

11 Feb 1898    I rode around the top paddock. Hoeing weeds. Smoke all day.

12 Feb 1898    A letter from Jack Peisley to go to Cowra and bring 70 sheep of Mr P. Squire’s from the Cemetery paddock. Went to Cowra. Commenced to rain. Came back without them.

13 Feb 1898    Sunday. Light mist all night with strong winds from south.

14 Feb 1898    Straining wires in the old fence. Light mist. Wind all night and all day. 55 points of rain since Saturday night.

15 Feb 1898    Commenced to rain at 6 o’clock. 22 points. From the north.

16 Feb 1898    I ploughed the garden. Cloudy day.

17 Feb 1898    I drove in to Cowra and took a lot of figs to Mrs Squire. I got the Specimen Case from McDonald and paid him one pound four shillings.

18 Feb 1898    I killed a sheep. Fine cool day.

19 Feb 1898    I rode to Cowra to see the sheep in the Cemetery paddock.

20 Feb 1898    Sunday. I rode up to Joe Hope’s selection and got some specimens of specular iron. Cool day.

21 Feb 1898    I harrowed the garden. Hot day.

22 Feb 1898    I finished hoeing weeds in the garden. Very hot day.

23 Feb 1898    Putting posts upright between the 80 acres and horse paddock. Hot.

24 Feb 1898    A letter from Mrs Squire to say that Mr Squire had landed in Sydney on Wednesday from New Zealand and I was to take Tom the horse to Cowra. I took him in. Paid Mrs Oll to the end of March for the Town and Country Journal. Warm day.

25 Feb 1898    Straining wire all day. Very hot.

26 Feb 1898    Straining wire all day. Great heat.

27 Feb 1898    Sunday. Mr and Mrs Squire drove out. Hot day.

28 Feb 1898    I put the sheep in the lucerne paddock. Cloudy.

1 Mar 1898      I put 1000 coarse wool sheep into the top paddock. Light rain at daylight and 34 points at 3 o’clock.

2 Mar 1898      Repairing gate on the Reserve. Rose, Commission Agent and another gentleman came and had a look at the sheep. Mr and Mrs Squire drove out. Sold the sheep – wethers 7/-, ewes 6/-.

3 Mar 1898      Gave J. Cass and Thomas Potts [notice] that Mr Squire wanted them.

4 Mar 1898      Pulling down the old Stockyard. Very sultry day.

5 Mar 1898      I rode to Strachan’s. Delayneys Chaff came to cut chaff for James Gleeson.

6 Mar 1898      Sunday. Mr Squire drove out. John Hood and son called.

7 Mar 1898      Taking up old posts of stockyard. I branded the ration sheep.

8 Mar 1898      I gave Anderson notice that the Yarra sheep would be mustered on Thursday. Finished taking down stockyard. Wind blowing from east.

9 Mar 1898      I gave Cass and Brown notice that the Yarra sheep would be mustered on Thursday. I killed a sheep. Hot day.

10 Mar 1898    I put the sheep in the yard. Mr Squire and Rose, the Commission Agent, drove out. Drafted the ewes from the wethers. Louis Ormsby took charge.

11 Mar 1898    I rode to Cowra. Gave Minnie 10/6 to send for a pair of specks. Paid T. Whittaker 7/6 for my watch. Hot day.

12 Mar 1898    Hugh Watt and I rode to the Blackfellows copper mine near Bumbaldry and from there to the Oak Hill in Bumbaldry paddock. A good indication for copper. We then rode in to Cowra and back.

13 Mar 1898    Sunday. Mr and Mrs Squire drove out. Cloudy all day.

14 Mar 1898    I rode to J. Cass. I got one Yarra Sheep in his (flock). A light shower this morning. A red dust storm this evening from the south.

15 Mar 1898    I took Paddy the horse and trace harness and filled up a rut with bushes at the lower dam. Cool day.

16 Mar 1898    Mr Squire drove Dunlop out and measured old tank at the House. Elija is going to make it larger. Cool day.

17 Mar 1898    I was making a break at gate on the Reserve. Elija started at dam.

18 Mar 1898    I finished break on Reserve. Killed a sheep. Hot dry day.

19 Mar 1898    I rode in to Cowra. Thunder but no rain.

20 Mar 1898    Sunday. At home. A few light showers to lay the dust. 72 points.

21 Mar 1898    I drove in to Cowra. I got some lining boards. Brought out specimens.

22 Mar 1898    I rode in to Cowra and gave Minnie the keys.

23 Mar 1898    Hoeing weeds in the Garden. Warm day.

24 Mar 1898    Making a break on Reserve gate to H. Watts. I rode to Hood’s slaughter yard.

25 Mar 1898    Making the break. Hood’s pigs in the lower dam. Hot day.

26 Mar 1898    I rode in to Cowra. Garden not at his office according to promise.

27 Mar 1898    Sunday. Mr Squire and family drove out. Hot day.

28 Mar 1898    I brought out 270 Sheep from Cemetery paddock. Signed for transfer from Minnie.

29 Mar 1898    I took the sheep to top dam. Not much water in it. Dry day.

30 Mar 1898    Cutting burrs. Mr Squire drove out a gentleman. Very hot day.

31 Mar 1898    I finished the break. Got my specks from Barraclough, Sydney.

2 Apr 1898      I rode in to Cowra. Got back at 11 o’clock. A letter from the Mines Department.

3 Apr 1898      Palm Sunday. Mr Squire drove Mr H. Ford Snr out.

4 Apr 1898      Cutting burr. Cold windy day. Elija Bryant working at tank.

5 Apr 1898      Cutting burr. Got a letter from Minnie O’Shaughnessy Cloudy.

6 Apr 1898      Cutting burr in the Yarra paddock. Sheep getting bogged in dam.

7 Apr 1898      I put the sheep in Yarra paddock. No water in top paddock. Dry day.

8 Apr 1898      Good Friday. Drove to Cowra and brought George Hurst out. Hot day.

9 Apr 1898      I got Jack Hood’s horse and buggy and drove to Cowra and stayed.

10 Apr 1898    Easter Sunday. Minnie and Grace O’Shaughnessy and I drove by Woodsflat to Waugoola and on to the 2 Mile Creek near Grubbenbong. Had dinner and drove to No. 1 Mick O’Briens’s pub. 40 miles.

11 Apr 1898    Trunkey 14 miles. 1 ½ mile past had breakfast at a dam. Broke a shaft going down steep cutting going down to the Abercrombie River. Got to Tuena at 5 o’clock. 20 miles.

12 Apr 1898    Followed the Peelwood Road. 8 miles. Turned to the Left through a gate. 6 miles to Cooks Vale, Mrs Costigan’s.

13 Apr 1898    Kate O’Shaughnessy married to Robert McDonnell by Rev. Father Carroll at Mrs Costigan’s Residence Cooks Vale. They started for Goulburn. John Costigan and I walked to the river.

14 Apr 1898    Mrs. Costigan drove Grace and I drove Minnie. Mr and Mrs Clancy on horseback. We went to Peelwood to Mass. We got home at 2 o’clock in the evening. Mr Clancy and I rode down the river to old Scrubby Rush, and came back the old road.

15 Apr 1898    John Costigan and I rode to Cordillera silver mine. We got some specimens. 8 miles. Had dinner at Mrs Fentons. 6 miles to Mount Costigan silver mine. We got some specimens and came on two miles to Mrs Costigans.

16 Apr 1898    I went in the buggy with Mr John Clancy to Peelwood silver mine and got some specimens and got back to Cooks Vale at dark.

17 Apr 1898    Sunday. Grace O’Shaughnessy, Minnie O’Shaughnessy and I started for Cowra. Met Mrs Costigan and her two sons, Mr and Mrs Clancy at the Abercrombie Caves. Had lunch and parted with Mrs Costigan. We got to Trunkey at six o’clock. 34 miles.

18 Apr 1898    We drove 7 miles along the Newbridge road and had breakfast. Kept the left hand road 7 miles to No. 1. 2 miles along the Mandurama road and had dinner. Mandurama 8 miles. Lyndhurst 3 miles. Stayed at Mr Closky’s Hotel.

19 Apr 1898    Started early and had breakfast at the Sheet of Bark, 14 miles and came on to Cowra 12 miles. I got a shaft in Jack Hood’s Buggy. I stayed all night.

20 Apr 1898    I drove Hood’s horse and buggy out to his place and drove George Hurst to Cowra in my own horse and buggy. Paid Hurst 7/-. Stayed all night.

21 Apr 1898    I drove out to Yarra.

22 Apr 1898    I took the sheep to water. Dry day.

23 Apr 1898    I rode to Cowra. War declared between America and Spain.

24 Apr 1898    Sunday. Mr Squire drove out a gentleman. Hot day.

25 Apr 1898    Putting up two round posts for a gate near the sheep yards. Hot day.

26 Apr 1898    I put up the gate. A letter from Minnie.

27 Apr 1898    I killed a sheep. Dry day. No sign of rain.

28 Apr 1898    I drove into Cowra and brought Minnie and Grace O’Shaughnessy to Yarra. Phil Kearns called.

29 Apr 1898    Painting door of woolshed with tar. Phil Kearns called.

30 Apr 1898    P. Kearns took Minnie and Grace to Wattamandarra.

1 May 1898     Sunday. Mr Squire drove out.

2 May 1898     Securing the wheat from the fowls. Cloudy all day.

3 May 1898     Boarding sheep race. A light shower. 11 points of rain.

4 May 1898     Boarding sheep race. Thunder in the north and west. Raining at 5 o’clock.

5 May 1898     A letter from Minnie. 88 points of rain last night. Wind blowing from the south with a few light showers.

6 May 1898     I drove to Cowra. Minnie and I went to the Post Office. I put 30 pounds into the Saving Bank. Paid P. Squire £1-1-4. Got to Yarra at 6.

7 May 1898     Boarding sheep race. Fine day.

8 May 1898     Mr Squire drove some gent out. He took some fowls back.

9 May 1898     I finished the sheep race. White frost. Dry day.

10 May 1898   I passed the split posts for James Brien. I lent him the horse and waggonette.

11 May 1898   Straining wire fence to sheep yard. Very cold all day.

12 May 1898   Straining wire. David Hood called. Cloudy day.

13 May 1898   I finished the fence. Took the sheep from top paddock to the lower dam to water. George Gillet putting a rope on top of load of hay at Sloans. The rope broke. He fell off and broke his neck.

14 May 1898   Raining fast. I rode to Cowra and back.

15 May 1898   Sunday. Mr and Mrs Squire drove out. Painting the Buggy.

16 May 1898   Digging post hole around stack. 13 points of rain last night.

17 May 1898   Fencing around the stack. Good shower at 5 o’clock/

18 May 1898   I finished fence at stack. Killed a sheep. 13 points rain.

19 May 1898   Mr Squire drove out. The Honorable Ewart Gladstone died.

20 May 1898   I drove in to Cowra and brought some bran and corn. Cold

21 May 1898   I drew some logs along the fence on the Grenfell road with old Paddy the Horse. Minnie and Grace went by Coach to Grenfell on their way to P. McGrath’s, The Pines. Cheque £5.0.0.

22 May 1898   Sunday. Mr Squire drove Constable Maher out. Fine day.

23 May 1898   Fixing up posts on the Grenfell road. 9 points rain at dark.

24 May 1898   Queen’s Birthday. Mr Squire drove out. Mrs George Wilson of Bumbaldry died.

25 May 1898   White frost. Very cold all day. Gleeson called.

28 May 1898   I rode to Cowra and led Paddy the horse and got him shod. Sent a picture by coach to Grenfell to Minnie.

7 Jun 1898      I put Paddy the horse in the Waggonette and and took Joey the galah with me and passed through Grenfell to the Pines. Patrick McGrath’s place near Bimbi 52 miles. A few light showers.

8 Jun 1898      Stayed at the Pines all day. Minnie and Grace O’Shaughnessy staying there. Dennis McGrath sick.

10 Jun 1898    P. McGrath put me on the track. Kikiamah Station. I passed the Station out onto the old Grenfell road to Young and followed along towards Grenfell and got some serpentine specimens at the Flinty Ridge. Stayed at Patrick Curry’s in Grenfell. Commenced to rain at dark.

11 Jun 1898    I had breakfast. Raining most all the way. Got to Yarra at 3 o’clock. Starr and sons came. 31 points of rain.

12 Jun 1898    Sunday. Mr Squire drove C.K. Rose out. Cloudy day.

13 Jun 1898    Tom Bryant started to plough on Yarra. A letter from Mr Squire.

14 Jun 1898    I rode to Cowra. Mr Squire rode with me to the Cemetery paddock. We got 250 Crossbred Sheep. I brought them to Yarra. I posted a Cowra paper and a letter to Minnie O’Shaughnessy at the Pines. Starr and sons commenced to plough.

15 Jun 1898    Mrs. Nicholas Jordan formerly Mrs Edward Markham of Spring Vale died at Clifton near Darbys Falls. Aged 78 years.

16 Jun 1898    I killed a sheep. Light showers. 21 points of rain..

17 Jun 1898    Drafting sheep. A few light showers.

18 Jun 1898    I rode in to Cowra Railway Station about Grace O’Shaughnessy’s return ticket to Sydney.

5 Jul 1898       I delivered 35 sheep to Tuckers man. Frost.

6 Jul 1898       I put a lock on the lower gate. Mr Squire drove out. Mary O’Shaughnessy married to Dennis McGrath at Patrick McGrath’s place, The Pines, near Bimbi.

7 Jul 1898       I put four of Mr Squire’s horses in the house paddock.

8 Jul 1898       I took Mr Squire’s horses and put them in his paddock near the Cowra Cemetery. Had dinner at J. O’Shaughnessy place. Frost.

21 Jul 1898     I killed a sheep. A letter from Grace to meet her in Grenfell on Saturday.

18 Sep 1898    Sunday. Mr Squire drove out and some young gent drove Mag, Nell and Mat Walsh out and got some flowers. Windy day.

19 Sep 1898    I got ewe and lamb out of John Bryant’s paddock. White frost.

17 Oct 1898    Noticed Harry Brien to repair all gaps he made in the Yarra paddock fence. I put the sheep in the lucerne paddock.

19 Oct 1898    Painting gates. Mr Squire rode out. The starrs finished the new fence. A light shower. The crops are drying up.

20 Oct 1898    Starrs have left Yarra. Mrs H. Watt brought from Cowra a set of shoe maker’s tools I got from Anthony Horderns and a packet of putty powder. Peroxide of Tin.

29 Dec 1898   I gave the sheep water and put them in the cultivation paddock.

30 Dec 1898   Mrs. Squire drove Mat Walsh out and took all the ripe apricots away. A letter from Sarah Hackett at Milton with a card in it. I finished making a table.

31 Dec 1898   I rode to Jack Hood’s for some beef. Thunder this evening and a few drops of rain. Very hot day.
