1883

1 Jan 1883      New Year’s Day. Tom Markham, James and I went to the back of P Murray’s paddock and drilled a hole in a large rock and blew it to pieces.

2 Jan 1883      Tom Markham brought in two loads of rails.j and Jim Lahey splitting.

3 Jan 1883      Tom Markham brought in a load of posts in the evening. James and Lahey finished splitting.

4 Jan 1883      James and Lahey cutting round posts in Middlemiss’ paddock. Tom Markham and I drawing them in on a truck.

5 Jan 1883      Drawing in posts all day. Mrs John Byrne and Miss Margaret Byrne came from Goolagong.

6 Jan 1883      Brought all our horses from Ryan’s paddock. We finished drawing in the posts. We put all our horses in Middlemiss’ paddock at 1/6 per head per week. Cunningham, Murray’s draper, arrested for stealing two Albert Chains from P Murray.

7 Jan 1883      Sunday.  At home all day.

8 Jan 1883      Tom Markham, James and I went up to Middlemiss and cut 18 bags of chaff. Arthur Ingrey came up. I had to go to Cowra with him. He gave me a cheque for £6.5.0 to pay interest on Minnie’s selection at Broula, and five shillings for one acre over in the other 40 acre selection. I went with him to the Australian Joint Stock Bank. He gave me a post dated cheque for 72 pounds to meet a Promissary Note due on 13 January. I gave him up to the 31st January to pay. Great wind at 2 o’clock with a few drops of rain. A Ball at J.E. Taylor’s tonight. Cunningham committed to Bathurst for stealing two gold Alberts from P Murray.

9 Jan 1883      Tom Markham brought a grinding stone from P Murray’s and went to Middlemiss for chaff, and brought a load of wood for the house.

10 Jan 1883    Tom Markham carting wood.

11 Jan 1883    Tom Markham took three horses and dray, and James Markham took his bullock team, and went to the Pine Mountain. I rode on horseback and camped at the High Springs. We loaded James Markham’s dray with pine joists.

12 Jan 1883    We loaded our dray with pine rafters and came to Cowra. Bill Edments drowned at Goolagong this evening.

13 Jan 1883    I was not well today. Bill Edments buried this evening.

14 Jan 1883    Sunday.  I went with J.E.Taylor in his buggy to a copper lode taken up by T Paterman, Grant and Dick Sloan. ½ a mile west of Bumbaldry. Not much of a show. They want to sink on the lode. We had dinner at Wilson’s public house. We got to Cowra at 7 o’clock.

15 Jan 1883    Tom Markham and I brought in a load of granite stone to build a chimney. In the evening Tom brought in a load of wood. James went to see Phillips the Solicitor. I got a letter from the Deeds Branch about the allotments at Goolagong. They demand ten pence assurance fee on the deeds. Hot day.

16 Jan 1883    Tom Markham and I took the two horses and dray to Enrights for a load of stone. Tom took a load of wood to Mrs Guinan?.

17 Jan 1883    Tom Markham brought a load of stone from Enrights and a load of wood in the evening.

18 Jan 1883    Tom carted a load of wood to Mrs Reily?. My back very sore.

19 Jan 1883    Tom Markham carting wood. John Hackett went on the coach to Gongolgan? On the Bogan River.

20 Jan 1883    James and Lahey finished front of saleyard. Tom Markham brought in a load of wood and then carted two loads of bricks, 1100 for J.B.Fitzgerald.

21 Jan 1883    At home. Sunday.  Frightful hot day.

22 Jan 1883    Tom Markham carting bricks.

23 Jan 1883    Mitchell, the Stonemason, agreed to put up a chimney for three pounds. Tom Markham carted three loads of bricks for Fitzgerald. I got some lime from Murray’s and a load of sand to make mortar. P Murray started to Sydney. A child of W Duggan’s buried today. I got eight pounds from James Lahey for carting timber for saleyards.

24 Jan 1883    Tom Markham carted 2,000 bricks from Cooper’s brick kiln in Middlemiss’ paddock. Bill Mitchell commenced the chimney. Alick Middlemiss, Hannah Middlemiss, and Hannah Walsh started for Sydney.

25 Jan 1883    Tom Markham carting wood. Warm day.

26 Jan 1883    Anniversary Day. Races at Ingrey’s at Broula. Tom Markham carted 1,000 bricks from Cooper’s kiln. I was working all day at the building.

27 Jan 1883    Working all day at the building.

28 Jan 1883    Sunday.  At home all day. Real hot day.

29 Jan 1883    Working at the building. Tom brought one load of wood.

30 Jan 1883    Tom Markham brought some hay in trusses from Middlemiss and brought a load of stone from Enrights. Arthur Ingrey came in. Mary O’Shaughnessy transferred 125 acres and 51 acres at Broula to him. Cloudy day.

31 Jan 1883    Tom Markham brought in a load of wood and searched the town for some lime. He got the promise of some from Robertson. I was putting in door sills all day. A letter from A Ingrey.

1 Feb 1883      Tom Markham got two bags of lime from Robertson. Mitchell finished the chimney and commenced the partition wall.

2 Feb 1883      Mitchell working at the wall. I got a timber licence for A Ingrey. Cloudy day.

3 Feb 1883      I sent the timber licence to Ingrey. Tom Markham carting wood. John Whitty’s son buried. Paid Mitchell 3 pounds.

4 Feb 1883      Sunday.  At home. Cloudy all day.

5 Feb 1883      Mitchell not at work. Tom Markham went up to Robert Ellis’s, Neila Creek, and brought three bags of lime. We got a water cask from W Boxall. Great wind all day.

6 Feb 1883      Mitchell not at work. Hot day.

7 Feb 1883      Ash Wednesday. Mitchell not at work. Alick Middlemiss and Hannah Middlemiss came from Sydney. He bought a new buggy.

8 Feb 1883      Tom Markham took the two horses and dray out to the Pines at the back of gale’s old sheep station and cut a load of round box timber caps for the saleyards and brought them in. Nichols, carrier, brought 1921 feet of flooring and weatherboards from Tom Clyburn’s sawmill,  Canowindra . I paid him the carriage, 4/- per hundred feet. £3.17.0. Old Mrs Joe Smith died.

9 Feb 1883      I was putting up weather boards on the front of the house all day. Tom Markham carting wood. I paid Tom two popunds. Hot day.

10 Feb 1883    Finished weatherboarding front of house. Hot sultry day.

11 Feb 1883    Sunday.  At home all day. Great shower of rain at 12 o’clock. Pat Tobin paid me two pounds for the use of my tip cart and harness.

12 Feb 1883    I lined the posts and put up weather boards on the chimney end of the house. Sam Nodstedt? Agreed to lay down all the joists for three pounds. Tom Markham brought in a load of caps for the saleyards. Paid Tom fifteen shillings. Real hot day.

13 Feb 1883    Sam commenced to square the joist. Mitchell commenced the brickwork. Tom Markham barking pines. Nearly done the weatherboarding the end of the house.

14 Feb 1883    I finished one end of the house. Mitchell finished the middle wall of the house. Tom Markham brought in a load of posts for the kitchen. Very hot day.

15 Feb 1883    I finished the gable round the chimney. Tom Markham brought in a load of timber for the kitchen. I put in some studs at east end of the house. Mitchell putting up the wall between the front rooms. Very hot day.

16 Feb 1883    I nearly finished the weather boards. Tom Markham brought some hay from Middlemiss. Paid Tom Markham £3.14.3 up to 21 February.

18 Feb 1883    Sunday.  At home all day. Real hot day.

19 Feb 1883    I commenced to board one of the front rooms. Tom Markham brought in a load of wood, round timber. I paid E Taylor for timber and bricks £7.2.2 by cheque.

20 Feb 1883    Boarding floor of the house all day.

21 Feb 1883    Finished boarding front room and commenced to board a bedroom. Bill Mitchell finished the partitions and started to build a chimney on each end of the house. Tom Markham brought a load of stone and 500 bricks from Cooper’s kiln.

22 Feb 1883    Tom Markham brought a load of stone and some water and sand. I finished boarding the bedroom. I got Mitchell to put in a stone foundation for a brick wall along the passage. I commenced the two bedrooms. George Lockyer’s daughter buried today.

23 Feb 1883    Tom Markham brought 1,000 bricks from cooper’s kiln. Paid Bill Mitchell 4 pounds. James and Lahey finished the saleyards.

24 Feb 1883    I was boarding. Tom Markham brought in two loads of wood. Some sheep offered for sale in the new yards. No bidders.

25 Feb 1883    Sunday.  At home. P Murray came from Sydney.

26 Feb 1883    Reily the shoemaker, died. Tom Markham carting bricks for John Crosbie. A little rain.

27 Feb 1883    Boarding floors. James painting the house. Cold day.

28 Feb 1883    Boarding floors. I got two doors and put them up.

1 Mar 1883      I finished boarding the passage. James putting up a kitchen. Tom Markham carting bricks for J.B.Fitzgerald. Lawyer Smith of Cocomingla died.

2 Mar 1883      I was boarding round the walls. James working at the kitchen. Tom Markham carting bricks.

3 Mar 1883      Tom Markham got a bag of lime and two doors at P Murray’s. James working at the kitchen. Sawn timber came for gates of stockyard. Bill Mitchell finished the chimney.

4 Mar 1883      Sunday.  At home all day. Mr Murray came home.

5 Mar 1883      I was putting up doors. James working at the kitchen. Mitchell putting up wall of the passage.

6 Mar 1883      Mitchell finished. I paid him in full £6.0.0

7 Mar 1883      I got 5 pair of window sashes and one door. I paid for the door and an empty case.

8 Mar 1883      I put up two pairs of sashes. Tom Markham finished carting bricks.

9 Mar 1883      I was putting up window sashes all day.

10 Mar 1883    James got 5 door locks and some empty cases for the kitchen chimney. I [put on some locks.

11 Mar 1883    Sunday.  I had a walk with P Murray to his paddock and back.

12 Mar 1883    Working at the house all day. W Ryan came from Goulburn with two race horses.

13 Mar 1883    I was working at the house all day. Races at Mulyan today. Bazaar at the Catholic Church tonight. James and Tom Markham went to the races. Gave Tom one pound.

14 Mar 1883    James and Tom went to the races. Bazaar on again tonight. John Smith of Cocumingla died.

15 Mar 1883    Tom and James got 500 bricks from James Markham. James, and Tom Markham working at the kitchen. A Judge held a court.

16 Mar 1883    I was working at the kitchen. James putting bricks in the chimney. Tom Markham brought in some round posts.

17 Mar 1883    James putting bricks in the kitchen chimney. I was assisting him. Tom Markham squaring round posts. Races at R Chivers, Back Creek.

18 Mar 1883    Sunday.  At home all day.

19 Mar 1883    Working at the kitchen. Fred Chivers buried todsy. I got 7 empty cases from J. E. Taylor. Mrs Alford died today.

20 Mar 1883    Working at the kitchen. Tom Markham carting bricks for J.B.Fitzgerald from Cooper’s kiln. Mrs Alford buried.

21 Mar 1883    Working at the kitchen. Raining all the evening.

22 Mar 1883    Working at the kitchen. Tom Markham assisting us.

23 Mar 1883    Good Friday. Working at the kitchen.

24 Mar 1883    We finished the kitchen. I got 4 cases from P Murray and door hinges. Paid Tom Markham one pound up to the 21st. Paid old Markham 15/-.

25 Mar 1883    Sunday.  At home all day.

26 Mar 1883    Working at the kitchen in the morning. And in the evening, we commenced to put up a closet. Jack Davis died.

27 Mar 1883    Working at the closet. Raining all the evening. Tom Markham finished carting bricks for J.B.Fitzgerald.

28 Mar 1883    Finished the water closet. Tom Markham got the piebald horse on his run.

29 Mar 1883    Tom Markham rode the piebald horse and took the old black mare and foal and the blue colt to Kikiamah. James and I plastering inside the house all day.

30 Mar 1883    James and I plastering all day. James Lynch died. Cloudy

31 Mar 1883    Plastering. We put up some calico on the ceiling.

1 Apr 1883      James Lynch buried today. Tom Markham came from Kikiamah. Cloudy day.

2 Apr 1883      We put in a tender to John Crosbie for a stone foundation for Anderson’s building. James and I finished calico ceiling in the parlour.

3 Apr 1883      James and I pointed six drills and took all the tools up to a little knob at the end of P Murray’s paddock. Tom Markham carting gravel for Crosbie.

4 Apr 1883      James and I commenced to quarry for P Murray. The blasting did not answer well. Tom carting gravel for Crosbie. I got 4 deeds for four allotments in the new township at Goolagong. A little rain.

5 Apr 1883      James and I  quarrying.  Tom Markham carting gravel for Crosbie. Cloudy day.

6 Apr 1883      James and I quarrying. Tom clearing up chips around the house.

8 Apr 1883      Sunday.  Ned Cantwell and I rode out to Broula Hill to see a copper lode he had found. It is half a mile north from the top of Broula Hill. Not much of a show on top. We had dinner with Pat and Bill Hennessy and came back to Cowra.

9 Apr 1883      James and I quarrying. Sarah and Grace in a buggy with Michael Ryan to James and I quarrying. Tom Callan’s.

10 Apr 1883    James and I quarrying all day. Sarah and Grace came back. I went to the bank. Tom Markham making the kitchen floor.

11 Apr 1883    James and I quarrying all day.

12 Apr 1883    James, Tom, and I quarrying. We used some dynamite.

13 Apr 1883    James and I blasting all day. Tom Markham brought us a cask of water and got two licences to quarry stone.

16 Apr 1883    James and I quarrying and blasting all day. Tom Markham carting sand for John Crosbie.

17 Apr 1883    James and I quarrying. P Murray went to Sydney.

18 Apr 1883    Quarrying. Tom Markham assisting us.

21 Apr 1883    Renewed the notice for a copper lease on Broula Hill. Quarrying.Paid Tom Markham £3.7.6 up to date.

22 Apr 1883    Sunday.  I went with W Ryan in his buggy to see the copper lode on Broula Hill. We met the Hennessys there. Not much work done there.

23 Apr 1883    I called in at the Bank and left the Deeds there for the Goolagong allotments. James repairing the dray.

5 May 1883     Tom Markham carting stone for Crosbie up to 12 o’clock. In the evening he brought the tools from the quarry. James and I put a crosspiece in the little Tipcart and got two boards from J.E.Taylor to put sides in the large dray.

6 May 1883     Sunday.  At home. Great shower this morning. I went to Mass.

7 May 1883     James and I commenced to sink a well close to the back of the house. Tom carting bricks for Middlemiss. I got a bill from P Murray.

8 May 1883     Tom Markham carting stone for Crosbie.

9 May 1883     James and I put in the windlass on the well and sunk down a little. Tom Markham finished carting for Middlemiss and carted 1,000 bricks for Joe Ousby. Cool day.

10 May 1883   James and I sinking. Tom cut top of the yellow box tree.

11 May 1883   I put shelves in a glass case for P Murray. After dinner went on sinking again. We got to soft drift.

12 May 1883   James and I sinking.  We are down 30 feet. Tom Markham brought in a load of round poles to make a fence. Ned Murphy came.

13 May 1883   Sunday.  At home all day.

14/17 May 83  James and I sinking the well.

18 May 1883   Tom Markham and James sinking the well. I made a curb to put under the bricks at the bottom of the well. They struck water at 4 o’clock at 68 feet.

19 May 1883   I finished the curb at 10 o’clock. James went down and put her down four feet. Water not coming in fast. Tom and I on top.

20 May 1883   Sunday.  At home all day. I went to Mass.

21 May 1883   We commenced to brick the well. Tom brought 500 bricks from Cooper’s kiln Paid Tom Markham up to date.

22 May 1883   James bricking the well. Tom carting bricks.

23 May 1883   James and I bricking the well.

24 May 1883   Queen’s Birthday. I went to Mass. Sports on the Showground and raining.

25 May 1883   James and I bricking the well until 4 o’clock. Raining.

26 May 1883   We got some calico and made a Fly? To put over the well. Tom Markham brought 500 bricks, 3,500 altogether. Raining most all day.

27 May 1883   Sunday.  At home. Light showers. Working at my diary.

28 May 1883   James and I bricking the well. Tom carted a load of bricks.

29 May 1883   James and I finished bricking the well. Tom Markham drew in some logs to raise top of well higher. Byrnes of Morongla Creek died.

30 May 1883   James and I logged up the well and put on the windlass stands. James went up to George Campbell’s to get a recommendation from him for a billet as a telegraph line repairer at Brewarrina. Tom Markham carting bricks for H Ford. Byrnes buried.

31 May 1883   I was working at the well. Tom carting bricks for Ford.

1 Jun 1883      Working at the well. James sent an application to be a line repairer at Brewarrina. Tom carting bricks.

2 Jun 1883      We finished the well, and bailed it empty.

3 Jun 1883      Sunday.  I went to Mass, and in the evening P Murray and I walked out to the burial ground. Light showers.

4 Jun 1883      James and I making spouting for the back of the house. Tom Markham carting bricks. Light showers.

9 Jun 1883      We brought in a load of sleepers. Another great fog.

10 Jun 1883    Sunday.  At home all day.

11 Jun 1883    James, Hurst and I squaring timber for the Show shed. Frost.

12 Jun 1883    We finished squaring. Maher delivered a load of pine rafters.

13 Jun 1883    Hurst, James and I sunk some post holes. We came home early

14 Jun 1883    James and I put a shed over the pig sty.

15 Jun 1883    I put cleats on posts in the house. James made a bed of mortar.

16 Jun 1883    James and I plastered a room. Some fine showers.

17 Jun 1883    Sunday.  At home all day.

18 Jun 1883    Hurst, James and I went to the back of Kellegat’s paddock and cut 21 round posts for the Showground shed.

19 Jun 1883    Hurst, James and I went out with Tom Markham and the two horses and dray and loaded him with round posts. James Markham came with his bullock team. We loaded him and came home. P Murray went to Sydney.

20 Jun 1883    All of us squaring posts for the Show shed.

21 Jun 1883    Squaring posts and put some of them up. Tom Markham carting gravel into the Convent yard. Cold day.

22 Jun 1883    Squaring posts all day. Tom Markham carting wood. Raining this morning.

23 Jun 1883    Squaring posts and putting them up. Tom Markham carting wood. P Murray came from Sydney. Raining most all day.

1 Jul 1883       Sunday.  Raining all day.

2 Jul 1883       James and I plastering our house. George Hurst put calico ceiling on one of the rooms. Raining all day.

3 Jul 1883       George Hurst ceiled the dining room. James and I putting cleats on the posts, ready for plastering. After dinner we went to the Show shed putting up rafters.

4 Jul 1883       Putting up rafters. Great fog.

5 Jul 1883       Putting on battens. White frost.

6 Jul 1883       Put weather boards on each gable end. And 20 sheets of iron.

7 Jul 1883       Putting on iron all day. Great frost.

8 Jul 1883       Sunday.  At home all day. Fine day.

9/10 Jul 1883  Putting up slabs. Cold day.

11 Jul 1883     We put up the office. Cold day.

12 Jul 1883     Finished the roof. And started to put up the tables. Cold day.

13 Jul 1883     Putting up the tables and the front door and one end window. Mrs Thomas Collins died.

14 Jul 1883     We put up all the doors and windows and put the iron on the office and locked up the place.

15 Jul 1883     Sunday.  I took a walk down the river and up to our quarry. I met P Murray there. Fine warm day.

16 Jul 1883     Working at the Show shed.

17 Jul 1883     We finished the Show shed at 12 o’clock. Tom Markham and I brought in a load of spare timber from the Show shed, and all the tools. Tom Markham brought in a load of bark the blacks cut.

18 Jul 1883     James and I splitting a gum tree below the Rocky Hole for posts. Tom Markham brought in a load of bark. Tom Fletcher got married to Nellie Robinson, back Creek. William came by coach from Sydney. Great frost.

19 Jul 1883     James and I finished splitting 35 posts. Tom Markham carting wood. W Walsh went by the Grenfell coach for Kikiamah.

20 Jul 1883     James and I and Tom Markham loaded the posts and brought them home.

21 Jul 1883     James and I digging out foundations for a cottage for P Murray on his six acre block.

22 Jul 1883     Sunday.  At home sick with a bad cold.

23 Jul 1883     James and I working at the foundation. I did not do much. Tom Markham  broke the shaft of the cart. Had to take it to the wheelright.

24 Jul 1883     James and I at the foundation. Too sick to work much. James soldered two tanks for P Murray. Tom Markham carting sand all day. Great frost this morning.

25 Jul 1883     James cutting out the foundation. I have a severe cold. Tom Markham carting sand and earth from the foundation.

26 Jul 1883     James working at the foundation. Tom Markham filled the tanks and took up the bellows to the quarry, and James put up the bellows.

27 Jul 1883     Tom Markham went for a load of pines for Crosbie. Raining most all day. James and I up at the work. Did not do much.

28 Jul 1883     James and I quarrying all day. Tom Markham carting wood, and filled the tank. Cold. Paid Tom Markham up to the 21st. Paid Robert Stephenson £1.11.0 insurance for the house – 200 pounds.

29 Jul 1883     Sunday.  At home. Mrs Hurst (birth?) of a young son.

30 Jul 1883     James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone. I paid Robert Stephenson £3.7.6 for the Town and Country Journal and I paid two pounds for two licences for quarrying. Ellen Walsh came from Kikiamah.

1 Aug 1883      James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone. Haugh commenced the stone foundation of P Murray’s cottage.

2 Aug 1883      James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone. Rain. Up to 4th.

5 Aug 1883      Sunday.  At home all day. Fine weather.

6 Aug 1883      James and I quarrying.  Tom Markham carting stone. Gooley got six months for sheep stealing.

7 Aug 1883      James and I quarrying.  Tom Markham carting stone. John Pierce died at Goolagong today. Frost.

8 Aug 1883      James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone. No frost.

9 Aug 1883      James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting sand. Haugh commenced the foundation of Warm day. Donnelly’s Mill.

10 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone. Dick the Soldier buried today.

11 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting sand. Started to rain at 12 o’clock and continued until 10 o’clock tonight. I got the Fire Insurance Premium.

12 Aug 1883    Sunday.  At home. Light showers and cold wind.

13 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting sand. Light rain.

14 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carting stone  and wood.

15 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carting stone up to 12 o’clock and then went to cart sand for Crosbie. A Concert in aid of the catholic Church. A great many people at it.

19 Aug 1883    Sunday.  At home. Tom Rankin of the “Sheet o’ Bark” died last night. Cloudy day.

20 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying up to 12 o’clock. Tom carting stone. Commenced to rain. We had to come home. Raining all the evening. A telegram from England that Archbishop Vaughan had died at Liverpool.

21 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone up to 12 o’clock. He went home to cut some wood.

22 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom brought up the tank with water. Bernard Monaghan hung himself in a shed at the back of his own house at 4 o’clock this evening.

23 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Coroner’s inquest on Monaghan at 4 o’clock.  Tom Markham carting sand for Crosbie. Frost.

24 Aug 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone Monaghan buried this evening. Frost this morning.

26 Aug 1883    Sunday.  At home. Mrs Coady from Mogong? Called.

27 Aug 1883    Tom and James brought the tools from the quarry. After dinner Tom drew in some round posts for a fence around the house. James and I started to fence.

28 Aug 1883    James, Tom and I fencing all day.

29 Aug 1883    James and I fencing. Tom carting gravel from the well. The Grenfell Show on today.

31 Aug 1883    We got two coils of No 10 wire from Warm day. Donnelly and some in posts.

1 Sep 1883      Fencing. Showers all day. A bill from P Murray.

2 Sep 1883      Sunday.  At home. I went to Mass. P Murray and I had a walk.

3 Sep 1883      Fencing. The piebald horse and black filly came from Milburn Creek. The Show gates sold to George Gillet for 35 pounds and the booth to Robert Daly. We put the piebald horse and black filly in Campbell’s paddock. Cold windy day.

4 Sep 1883      James and I went to dig out the foundation for P Murray at McLeod’s Blacksmith’s shop, but McLeod would not let us. After dinner, Tom and James started to cart stone. James assisting to load. Brought 4 loads. Cold windy day.

5 Sep 1883      Tom Markham carting and James loading. I was making gates for front and back of the house. Haugh started work at P Murray’s cottage.

6 Sep 1883      I made the front gate and hung it. James and Tom carting stone.

7 Sep 1883      James loading and Tom carting stone, and I was stacking stone at the back of McLeod’s Blacksmith’s shop. Light showers.

8 Sep 1883      I made a gate. Tom and James carted 4 loads of stone to P Murray’s cottage. And some water. A fog this morning.

9 Sep 1883      Sunday.  After dinner I walked up to where Anderson’s men were getting metal for the street. It is great rubbish. I came around the mountain to our own quarry and down to P Murray’s. He and I walked over to the Showground. Fine day.

10 Sep 1883    Tom carting. James quarrying. I gave P Murray a Promissary Note for 100 pounds, due in 4 months. J. H Turner sold all his furniture. Crosbie paid Tom Markham £3.17.6. Joe Ousby paid me 13/6.

11 Sep 1883    I was stacking stone. Tom carting. I went to the quarry to assist James. Mr Francis, the contractor for P Murray’s store came from Sydney. Great many people coming in for the Show. Advance Tom Markham one pound. Pat Walsh and his wife came from Kikiamah and stayed at Middlemiss’. Bill Ryan came from Goulburn and Michael Ryan brought a draught stallion of W Ryan’s.

12 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying. Commenced to rain. We had to come home. Tom Markham carted 2 loads of stone. I went to the Showground in the evening. Great many people there. Cold and showery.

13 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying up to 12 o’clock. We came home and had dinner and went to the ploughing match in Stibbard’s paddock. Raining all the evening. Pat Walsh and Mrs Walsh going to stay all night. Tom Markham brought a load of wood.

14 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone to the store. Ploughing match on today. James, Sarah, Mary and Grace and Tom Markham went to a dance at Middlemiss’s. Cloudy all day.

15 Sep 1883    James quarrying. Tom carting for the store. I was stacking it. Pat Walsh, Mrs walsh and Ellen Walsh started for Kikiamah. J.H.Turner got a purse of 100 sovereigns.

16 Sep 1883    Sunday.  At home. I went to Mass. J.H.Turner started for Albury.

17 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carting stone and water to P Murray’s cottage. Dick Carland died. Fine day.

18 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carted one load of bricks to P Murray’s cottage, and carted stone and water and two loads of stone to the store. Dick Carland buried in the Cowra burial ground.

19 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carting to the store. Great thunder and lightning at 6 o’clock this evening. P Murray gone to Sydney.

20 Sep 1883    James loading. I went to quarry on top of the hill in sight of George Campbell’s fence.

21 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying on top of the hill. Tom carted 7 loads from there. We killed a diamond snake.

22 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carted two loads of stone to the cottage and took a load of wood home.

23 Sep 1883    Sunday.  James, Tom and I went fishing in Middlemiss’ paddock. Could not catch any fish. Fine day.

24 Sep 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carted three loads of stone and then carted sand to P Murray’s cottage. The masons not at work.

1/2 Oct 1883   James and I quarrying. Tom Markham carting stone to P Murray’s cottage.

3 Oct 1883      Tom Markham carting stone from the old quarry to the store. James assisting him to load. I commenced to quarry in a fresh place near the old Binnie road.

4 Oct 1883      Tom Markham carted a load of bricks to George Hurst and carted 6 loads of stone to the store. James helping him to load. I stacked the stone and after dinner I was quarrying. I paid Bill Ryan six pounds for service of entire? Horse and 4 pounds for rent for the cottage.

5/6 Oct 1883   Tom carting stone to the store. James assisting him to load. I stacked it and went and quarried some stone.

7 Oct 1883      Sunday.  I went to Mass and after dinner I went to Middlemiss . Alick and I went fishing. We could not catch any. Fine day.

8 Oct 1883      James soldering spouting up to 12 o’clock for George Hurst and then assisted Tom Markham to load.

9 Oct 1883      James and I stacked a lot of stone for the store. Tom Markham carting water all day. James getting stone at the old stone quarry. I was quarrying on the Binnie road. Heavy wind and a little rain at 4 o’clock.

10 Oct 1883    Tom Markham carting stone to the store. James loading. Robert Stephenson came to us about our licences.

11 Oct 1883    James got a licence to quarry for Tom Markham and me. Assisted P Murray to put a reaper and mower together.

12 Oct 1883    Tom carting stone to the store. James assisting him to load. I was stacking stone, and assisting P Murray to put a mower together. I got a subpoena – Crosbie and Coady 

13 Oct 1883    James and I quarrying all day. Tom Markham carting sand to cottage, and two loads of stone to the store.

14 Oct 1883    Sunday.  At home all day.

15 Oct 1883    Rained all night and all day. I appeared as awitness at the Court House. Crosbie and John and W Coady. Crosbie gained the case. James, and Tom Markham ceiled a bedroom.

16 Oct 1883    James and I quarrying. Tom carting stone to the store.

17 Oct 1883    Tom Markham carted 600 bricks to the cottage. We commenced to take the earth out of the lower bedroom and the kitchen. Finished at 3 o’clock and went to the quarry. Tom carted one load.

19 Oct 1883    James and I quarrying all day. Tom carting stone to the store. James and I measured the stone stacked at the store – 120 perch. John O’Brien died last night. Great hailstorm at Merriganowry

22 Oct 1883    James and Tom carted 14 loads of stone from P Murray’s store to the new one, and 3 loads of sand to Crosbie. James and I went to Murray’s cottage and gathered up all the stone the masons left and measured all the stone work. I paid R Ellis 13/6 for lime.

23 Oct 1883    Tom Markham carting the stone that was left at P Murray’s cottage. James O’Shaughnessy assisting him to load. James and Mr Francis measured the stone work of P Murray’s cottage. I was stacking stone at P Murray’s store. Bill Ryan came from Goulburn.

24 Oct 1883    James and I quarrying stone. Tom carted 5 loads. In the evening we stacked the stone.

30 Oct 1883    I took the driving wheel of a stripping machine off for P Murray . Tom Markham carted 3 loads of stone to P Walsh’s Mill chimney. James assisting him to load, and one load of stone to our house. After dinner, I went up to the quarry and cut some board posts for a shed.

31 Oct 1883    James, Tom Markham and I took the horses and dray to where we were quarrying stone and brought in two loads of round posts and wall plates. Tom Markham went to George Campbell’s and brought down the piebald horse and black filly and paid the agistment for them.

1 Nov 1883     James and I putting up a shed. Tom Markham bailed out the well and in the evening brought in some battens and firewood.

2 Nov 1883     James and I finished putting on the rafters and battens at 12 o’clock, and in the evening we commenced to mow barley. Tom Markham brought in poles and doglegs  for fence around the shed.

3 Nov 1883     Tom Markham carted timber, bricks, lime, sand and water to P Murray’s cottage and carted some timber to put under the stack.j and I finished mowing at 12 o’clock. I went to the sale of McLeod’s old shop.

4 Nov 1883     Sunday.  I went to Mass and in the evening I went to a meeting at the Convent School. Mr Cusack and I were appointed gatekeepers for the Catholic picnic.

5 Nov 1883     Carted in the hay and put the bark on the shed.

6 Nov 1883     James and I down the town after dinner. Tom Markham brought in a load of wood.

7 Nov 1883     Tom Markham took two loads of galvanised iron up to P Murray’s cottage and a load of wood to the Showground. James and I put up a flower bed at back of the house. Rain after dark.

8 Nov 1883     James, Tom Markham and I put up a fruit stall at the showground. Great rain today.

9 Nov 1883     Prince of Wales’ Birthday. Catholic picnic at the Showground. Cusack and I kept the gates. A good crowd on the ground.

10 Nov 1883   James and I putting up round palings on Middlemiss’ boundary and ours. Tom Markham brought in a load of round palings. Great rain before 12 o’clock. Pat Mulally came to Donnelly’s.

11 Nov 1883   Sunday.  At home all day. Great rain and wind in the evening. 12 Nov 1883. James and I taking earth out of P Murray’s cottage. Tom Markham (taking) it to the front verandah.

13 Nov 1883   James and I finished taking out the earth at 12 o’clock.Tom Markham finished carting it away in the evening.

14 Nov 1883   Tom Markham carting McLeod’s old blacksmith’s shop up to James Ousby’s place. James putting up a stone foundation for a verandah at our own place.

15 Nov 1883   Tom carting old shop. I pulled down some posts for him. James putting up stone foundation at our place.

16 Nov 1883   Tom carting away the old timber, and commenced to clear away the  rubbish for P Murray.

17 Nov 1883   We finished cleaning up at the old blacksmith’s shop at 12 o’clock. James finished the stone wall in the evening. James and I and Francis the contractor pegged out the foundation of P Murray’s new store at corner of Kendal Street. Tom brought in a load of round palings.

18 Nov 1883   Sunday.  I went to Mass and in the evening P Murray and I inspected the gravel quarries on the opposite side of the river.

19 Nov 1883   James, Tom Markham and I commenced to dig out the foundation for P Murray’s new store. Real hot day.

20 Nov 1883   James and I digging out the foundation. Tom Markham carting away the earth. I paid A Middlemiss 20 pounds for the allotment.

21 Nov 1883   James and I digging out the foundation all day. Walter Bryant commenced to cart gravel for concrete foundation. Martin Ryan came from Toohey’s in Sydney to take possession of  the Royal Hotel. Hennessy the Publican could not keep the house any longer. Real hot day.

22 Nov 1883   James and I finished the foundation. Tom Markham carting away the earth. Hot day.

23 Nov 1883   Tom carting away the earth from the foundation. James and I not doing much.

24 Nov 1883   James and I put up some paling at the house. Tom Markham went to Ellis’ limekiln for a load of lime for P Murray. Paid Tom Markham up to 21st.

25 Nov 1883   Sunday.  I rode to the quarry at Chivers and back. Hot day.

26 Nov 1883   James, Tom and I commenced to put in a concrete foundation for P Murray’s store. After dinner, I agreed with Martin Ryan, Toohey’s agent to take charge of the Royal Hotel at £2.10.0 per week. We went to Phillips’ office to get the transfer but Hennessy could not find the licence. We came back to the Royal and Mr Ryan gave me in charge of the Royal Hotel.

27 Nov 1883   At the Royal all day. We got the Licence transferred to my name.

28/30 Nov 83  In charge of the Royal.

1/2 Dec 1883  At the Royal.

3 Dec 1883     Martin Ryan, T T and J. Toohey’s agent asked £280 for the Licence and goodwill and all the furniture and liquors – everything connected with the House.

4 Dec 1883     I closed with Martin Ryan for the Royal Hotel for £280.

5 Dec 1883     I paid Martin Ryan all the money I took since I took charge of the Royal Hotel.

6 Dec 1883     At the Royal. The House in a fearful dirty state.

7/15 Dec 83    At the Royal. Getting the house a little cleaner.

16 Dec 1883   At the Royal. P Walsh and Bridget Walsh started for Kikiamah.

24 Dec 1883   At the Royal. Kept busy today. Got half cask of beer from the Cowra Brewery and a hogshead from Sydney.

29 Dec 1883   John and Miss Hackett came by coach from Gongalong.

30 Dec 1883   Sunday.  All the grass in Ryan’s paddock burnt. Hot winds.

31 Dec 1883   Tom, Margaret and Ellen Walsh came from Kikiamah. I took out a Billiard Licence. Tom Markham finished the concrete foundation for P Murray’s new store.
