Patrick CONYNGHAM – Part TWO
Patrick’s Second Marriage
Eliza QUINN married Patrick on 25 Dec 1837 at St Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church, Windsor, NSW some 6 years after his first wife Honora died. Rev. Fr. John Brady officiated and the witnesses were James EVANS, Emu Plains; James CASSIDY, Windsor and Maria BURGESS, Windsor. The bride was 16 years old, only eight years older than Patrick’s and Honora’s daughter Margaret.
Eliza has been identified within descendant families as
”a soldier’s daughter born circa 1820 in the County of Kent, Eng, and
arrived in the Colony of NSW circa 1824″.
Further research has substantiated this story. Eliza was the daughter of Private Charles QUINN of the 3rd Regiment, later the 39th Regiment and his wife Esther COOGAN whom he married in Newry, County Down, Ireland on 14 Jul 1819. Eliza’s birth/baptism record has not been found, however, if she was born in Kent then it was probably at or near Chatham, the great military base in Kent where the regiment prepared for its posting to the Colony.
The QUINN family arrived with the 3rd Regiment (Buffs) in 1824, firstly to Port Dalrymple, Launceston, Tasmania, then to Hobart where her brother Henry was born in 1825. Charles Quinn exchanged to the 39th Regiment and the family moved on to Wellington then Bathurst in NSW.
Eliza CONYNGHAM nee QUINN died on 2 Oct 1899 from Heart Disease, in her home at 2 Bloomfield St., Surry Hills, Sydney. Her youngest son, Septimus, was informant on her death certificate. A funeral notice in SMH 4 October 1899 read as follows:
“Friends of Ambrose, Albert and Septimus and also Mrs. J. Malone, Mrs E. Glading and John Quinn are respectfully invited to attend the funeral of their mother and aunt, Eliza Conyngham”
Eliza was buried on the same day in Grave 408, Roman Catholic Section M.1, A, Rookwood Cemetery with her son Napoleon Henry Conyngham. Her son Charles was buried in the adjoining plot: Grave No. 407. Eliza was aunt to a John Quinn and a niece to the Rt. Rev. John Quinn of Armagh, Ireland.
Patrick and Eliza had 15 children as follows:
[1] Patrick CONYNGHAM was born ca 1838, probably at Emu Plains NSW.
[2] Mary Anne Matilda CONYNGHAM was born 1840 at Emu Plains, NSW. She married Richard J. VEITCH, a widower, on 5 Mar 1864 at 105 Prince Street, Sydney, NSW. Their marriage notice in SMH, 21 Apr 1864, read:
“By special licence, by the Rev John Reid, Richard James Veitch to Mary Ann Matilda Conyngham, eldest daughter of Patrick Conyngham, of Bank Street, Chippendale, Sydney.”
Mary Ann’s First Marriage
Richard James VEITCH was born in 1835 at Middlesex, Eng. On Saturday 12 Dec 1868. His name appeared in the Empire newspaper, one of a list of electors with his brothers in law Charles and Edward Conyngham. He died in 1882 at Sydney, NSW and his passing was marked by death and funeral notices published in the SMH on 26 Sep 1882
“VEITCH — September 25″’, at his residence, No.11, Brisbane Street, just off Oxford Street, Surry Hi/Is, Richard James Veitch of Middlesex, England, aged 47 years. Home papers please copy.”
His funeral was on the same day, the 26th September 1882:
“FRIENDS of Mr. Richard James Veitch, are respectfully invited to attend his Funeral, to move from his late residence, 11 Brisbane St, off Oxford St, this Tuesday afternoon at half past three p.m., for Devonshire St Cemetery. H Mason, Undertaker 74 Oxford Street.”
This was followed by another four notices:

- from Edward, Charles and Ambrose Conyngham, three of his bachelor brothers-in-law’
- Henry Chatto, another brother-in-law (married to Esther Catherine (Kate) Conyngham); and
- his friends or business acquaintances John Papworth and John Cotton.
Richard Veitch was buried in the Presbyterian Section of Devonshire Street Cemetery, Sydney with his first wife Frances Elizabeth (nee ATKINS) (d.29 Oct 1862) and four infant children – William died 15 Feb 1860, Mary Ann died 28 Jul 1860, Thomas died 1862 and Emeline Eliza died 30 Apr 1867 ln 1901 their remains were removed and reinterred in Waverley Cemetery.
Only one child is known:
Emmerline/Emeline Eliza VEITCH was born on 11 Jun 1865 at Sydney, NSW. Her birth was announced in the SMH.

Mary Anne’s Second Marriage
Following Richard’s death Mary Anne married another widower Edwin Washington TUNKS, who was born in 1843. His parents were William and Margaret Tunks and he was a great grandson of William Tunks, 1754-1921, Marine Corps, who arrived on the Sirius with the First Fleet in 1788. Edwin died in Granville, Sydney, NSW in 1918.[1]

Edward, his brother Charles and brother-in-law Richard James VEITCH were mentioned in a list of electors published on Saturday 12 Dec 1868 in the Sydney newspaper, Empire. He was residing at George St., Redfern, when he witnessed the death of his father, Patrick John Conyngham, on 9 Aug 1871. In 1872 he was a Cabinet Maker residing at 7 Agnes Terrace Victoria Street, Sydney with his brothers: Charles, a Printer and Ambrose, a Tobacconist.
It appears that Edward moved to Mudgee ca.1874, after his brother Charles died and that he became estranged from the younger members of the family. For some years he was a member of Mudgee Volunteer Fire Brigade and a framed illuminated scroll marking that service hangs on the wall in Mudgee’s Pioneer Museum. The text reads:
“To Mr EDWARD CONYNGHAM,
Sub-Lieutenant, Mudgee Volunteer Fire Brigade.
COMRADE
We the undersigned Officers and Members of the Brigade asking your acceptance of this simple address as a memento of the good feeling and sincere respect entertained for you by every member of the Brigade desire to express to you the loss which the Brigade will sustain, in parting with an officer who has been closely identified with it since its formation – and who has ever performed his duty with zeal and discretion. Edward did not marry and had no known children. He was buried on the following day in the Anglican Section of Mudgee Cemetery, Rev. North officiated and the witnesses were T. M. Brady and Wm. Wilson. His grave is not marked. On 27 Jan 1906 an In Memoriam notice was placed in the SMH by his eldest sister Mary Anne Matilda
“….at the Mudgee Hotel, Mudgee, the residence of his sincere friend, Mr. Charles Harper, Edward Conyngham, the beloved brother of Mrs. E. Tunks. Loved by all.”
